    Hi guys,

I would like to ask you all to guide and advice me if I should go for Vista ultimate 64bit or 32bit.

I know and have heard from people that 64 bit version is faster but have problems like compatibility. I want to know how bad is it??

I also want to know which games/software cannot run on the 64bit version etc.... etc...

looking forward to your comments :)

Drivers. 64Bit drivers are very hard to come by.

If you aren't buying a new comp that the mfgr is selling w/ V64 you're better off waiting another year or two.

Really not many applications which will even take advantage of V64. If you don't have a specific app and need, better stay away.

Is this really the case, or are we just spreading rumours?

    I haven't tried Vista x64. Have you?
When I tried Windows XP x64 (two years or so ago), I had no problems finding drivers for my hardware. However, I don't have printer, scanner, webcam or other external hardware, where it might be harder to find drivers.
However, this was two years ago, running an OS hardly anyone have even heard of. I'd expect Vista to have vastly better driver support.

So perhaps it's time to stop blindly forwarding the same rumors, and actually check up on it. Who here have actually tried Vista 64-bit? What driver issues did you encounter?

Many games are starting to hit the memory limit on 32-bit. Microsoft has just published a hotfix that decreases memory consumption a bit under Vista, which *mostly* allows them to scrape by. But it won't be long before this becomes a serious problem, and running a 64-bit OS will help, even if the game itself is 32-bit.

(32-bit application running under 64-bit OS can be made to use up to 4GB of memory. 32 bit application running under 32-bit OS can't exceed 2GB)

I have first hand experience on Vista x64 and its drivers, and I'd just like to point out that in my case it was super easy to find the correct drivers. Even my mouse, a Logitech G5 Laser mouse had correct drivers.

So while it may have been difficult to find drivers with Windows XP x64, it appears that this is no longer the case with Vista x64, and with that in mind, the x64 version is definitely the one you want to go with as it increases the amount of RAM that can be dedicated to a program from two gigabytes to four gigabytes.

64Bit drivers are NOT hard to come by. Vista has the great 64bit support, and yes most software and games can be installed. There are slight problems with some apps you may come across, like right click menus on some apps. But overall it's almost as compatible as 32bit IMO and no Major issues to report. Most problems I had with 64bit Vista, had to do with Vista itself.

Here is a thread I wrote about it......... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=135122&highlight=vista+64bit
