Go to the Java website http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp to download the Java programs. It should autodetect that you have W7. I have only tried it with msie 8, both 32 and 64 bit versions of ie. You have to download and install both the 32bit and 64bit versions of Java.

Java is working as it should on the system in my sig.

Edit: Oops, I just noticed the version of W7 you are using, that isn't the RTM is it?

not yet running retail or rtm. This test machine has build 7229 which is the last one that has the native msft bluetooth stack (aacckkkk!) but otherwise it appears to be close to rtm.

did you install java in any specific sequence? I have the 32 and 64 bit installers of 1.6b16.

Well, when Adobe decides to write a 64 bit Flashplayer, maybe it will start working.

I didn't install in any sequence intentially. I was running ie8 64bit at the time so I intalled the 64bit version first, then switched to 32bit ie and installed.

I didn't find the installer designation 1.6b16 you mentioned.

The 32bit version is 6.0.160.1 Product Name Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U16 and dated 9/26/2009. (This is from the Properties/Details of the Java.exe file)

The 64bit version has the same info only the file size of the Java.exe file is 162KB vs. 141KB for the 32bit version.

    got is, here's the 'fix'....

In opera, go to tools|prefs|content and make sure that the 'Enable Java' check-box is set.

Apparently, on a 64 bit system (Winderz, Linux, all of them), Opera will occasionally not be able to 'see' the jre plugin, 32 *or* 64 bit. Both Opera and Java 32/64 install fine, but there is a config problem that gets in the way of the proggies working together.

On msft 64 bit, it's because of the Program Files (x86) path. On linux, it's because of the way the Sun installer jam the jre runtimes in place.

Funny/weird (not funny/haha) thing is, once the Opera config was fixed, java in MSIE 8 started working.

In either case, it's an easy fix.

Now to go yell at Adobe (well, open a support case) about 64 bit Flash.
