Hi, does 7-zip already support repairing/reading faulty archives? I dont want the winrar pop-up anymore and so i´m looking for a free solution. 7-zip seems good but i often download files that come with those repair-files in case some of the multiple .rar files is faulty. So i would need7-zip to use those files to sucessfully extract everything![]()
thanks

I believe 7-zip can read damaged archives assuming that those archives still have the proper header information. Those "repair" files are the hash files that let you know whether the file downloaded/transfered properly or not. 7zip does have hash checking.
-
I started using it because it gives a pop-up Window of the directory that you've extracted the file into. -
i used izarc like 1-2 years ago and found it kinda buggy. Also in terms of speed and compression ratio i read that 7-zip is way better than izarc (and also beats winrar) ?
-
It looks very interesting, I will give it a go..
-
Dunno about other uses, but this is all I wanted out of it and it works great. -
well i just tried both.. it seems like when there are multiple files, then you have to mark all those files and extract them. if u click on one of those files it will give a crc failure. With winrar you jsut click on one of them and it will automatically know the other files too and extracts without a failure.
Also it seems like izarc has some problems with archives which are callrd .r01 .r02 .r03 ,.... -
this does not surprise me,,,,that this utility has strengths and weaknesses,,years ago, i tried many free zip utilities, the only one that did the job was Norton,,, I could extract the complete files from a damaged zip file (an archive), view them, extract them and then rebuild it, unfortunately it worked its best on zip files,,other compression protocols were not covered as i recall,,, The Hunt for a complete(more or less) archive utility that is free continues,,I know its there, I have seen many,,I'll dig around some more,,I have downloaded a few that work on ntfs systems however I too got rid of them, when i found adware was the price of them.

heres one,,,I have not tested this, however it looks clear, check it out!!!!!!
FreeArc Archiver
FreeArc is a modern general-purpose archiver. Main advantage of FreeArc is fast but efficient compression and rich set of features.
FreeArc works 2–5 times faster than best other compression programs
Many more features and advantages listed....
•Overall, 11 compression algorithms and filters are included (compared to 3 in 7-zip and 7 in RAR) and this number still grows
•Ability to create SFX (self-extracted) archives and installers
other mentioned:
"Compared to RAR and 7-zip, FreeArc at this moment lacks the following: multi-volume archives, 64-bit version, storing of file attributes/extended timestamps/NTFS streams in the archive, bcj2, data segmentation. These are planned to be fixed in subsequent versions."
http://www.freearc.org/
Heres a site that has tested all kinds of archivers,,,Maximum Compression,,,heres a few words from this.
Maximum Compression's goal is to show the maximum achievable data compression ratio for several filetypes (text, executable, jpeg etc). The best programs for every filetype are compared in a table indicating compression ratios and switches/options used to achieve that compression (SFC). Every program will only be listed once (with the switches yielding the highest possible compression ratio for that test/file). I prefer command line (console) compression programs over GUI ones.
If you are looking for more realistic data like efficiency and (de)compression speed of lossless compression software have a look at the Multiple file compression test benchmarks (MFC). The MFC benchmark lists performance comparisons of nearly all known archivers. The MFC test set consists of dozens of different files types (totaling 510 files, 300+ MB).
Dont forget to click on categories in SFC and MFC for rankings and ratings .

well.. according to that site winrar seems just fine. it beats 7-zip in multi-files and is slightly weaker in single files.
but actually i wanted to get rid of winrar ;D
Multi-File decompressing is the the most thing i do. -
From the above website I have extracted the checkered flag winners for each:
Single File Compression (SFC)
Text-english text- WinRK 3.1.2
Text-Logfile-PAQ8PX
Text-Sorted Word List-PAQ8PX
Executable-EXE -WinRK 3.1.2
Executable-DLL-WinRK 3.1.2
Graphics-BMP(BitMap)1356x1020 pixels (4Mbyte)-PAQ8PX
Graphics JPEG/JPG(mp3.avi.ect)-1152x864 pixels / 16.7 million colors (823 Kbyte) -PAQ8PX
Other Data-HLP-PAQ8PX
Other Data-DOC-PAQ8PX
Other Data-PDF-WinRK 3.1.2
Best overall single compression program(sfc) is PAQ8PX,,2nd WinRK 3.1.2
Multiple File Compression and Decompression
Large File Collection- Several filetypes (510 files, 301 Mb in total).Ranked on compression ratio.-PAQ8px
Large file collection-Several filetypes (510 files, 301 Mb in total).Ranked on efficiency.- FreeArc 0.666
Large File Collection-Several filetypes (510 files, 301 Mb in total).Ranked on compression time. QPress 0.38b
Large File Collection-Several filetypes (510 files, 301 Mb in total).Ranked on decompression time LZop 1.02rc1
A Very Nice Job done by all archive utilities and the website doing the tests !
