it might be a silly question, but since its not full hd, is it better to watch 1080p scaled down, or 720p scaled up?
what do most people prefer?
-
It generally is not much of a difference, but 1080p is slightly better, if all other things are equal.
-
I prefer 720p scaled up. I have a 1440*900 resolution screen, so 1080p scaled down would'nt be as nice as 720p scaled up I think.
-
wow, so only 2 people watch movies on their laptops.
thanks for the feedback. i thought there would have been some more opinions. -
hi,
i have an external monitor with this resolution connected to the laptop (for movies)
My 0.02: on this resolution 720p scaled up begins to show visible blocks in some movies, 1080p looks better. -

I say that you wont be able to tell the difference no matter how hard you try unless you have the monitor doing the scaling and its a very poor hardware scaler. With the video card doing the work it will look great and with the dot pitch so small and the screen so small I do not think you could detect the difference.
On paper the scaling down 1080 would be better. You can always take data away from an image, but you can never create it. So when you scale up its artificial when you scale down your just taking some of the bits and pieces you do not need.
Works similar with say photoshoping images. You can always scale down no matter how big the images was or how small you want it, but scale up too much and you are left with total crud. -
Both will suffer interpolation as input is not native resolution. But as a rule shrinking images has the effect of increasing sharpness. Enlarging reduces sharpness.

as i thought, 1080p seems to be the way to go with this resolution.
thanks for the replies. -
You know, you could download a 720p and 1080p trailer from somewhere and see which one looks the best.
