My current Windows 10 version is 1607 (build 14393.1066).

A week or so ago I was notified by the system about a new major update. I postponed it a few times and ultimately I missed the time I had set for the the update prompt to come back up again, my computer was off. Now I haven't gotten the prompt anymore and I don't know how to trigger it.

If I go to the Shut Down menu I can see the options "Update and Restart" and "Update and Shut Down" but with neither of those two options there's any update performed.

Another issue that I think is related to this is that I have suddenly run low on storage space, I think 50 GB or so have been suddenly occupied, I think it's the files of the update or a back up of the current version of Windows somewhere.

In fact in C:\ I found this hidden folder "$WINDOWS.~BT" which is about 5 GB and I think this is related to the update but I'm not sure what it is. And regardless there's still another ~45 GB of space that are still missing.

    So my questions are:
    1) How do I trigger the update?
    2) What is this folder $WINDOWS.~BT and what should I do with it?
    3) Where's the rest of my missing GB and is there any folder I should delete after the update is done, like obsolete Windows backups?

    1) Download the advanced Disk Cleanup shortcut, run it as admin, check all the boxes, then hit ok and let it clean up everything
    2) Disable your Antivirus
    3) Remove any Windows 10 tweaks you may have done with apps like O&O ShutUp10 or Spybot Anti-Beacon or the likes
    4) Reboot
    5) Download the Windows 10 Creators Upgrade Manual upgrade file
    6) Run it as admin and let it download and reboot when prompted
    7) Once you are back in Windows, run the Advanced Disk Cleanup shortcut as admin, check all the boxes, and let it clean up
    8) Go to START > All Programs > Windows System > Control Panel > Programs & Features
    9) Uninstall the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant located towards the bottom of the apps list
    10) Go to the root of C:, then delete the $GetCurrent folder

Thank you, all done! So now I have $GetCurrent, $WINDOWS.~BT and Windows.old folders for a total of 23 GB, which I didn't delete yet. Before I do it, just wanted to make sure, is it safe to just go ahead an delete these? Won't my system need these at any point? Just double checking.

I did get my 50 GB back by the way, I guess the update was being downloaded multiple times somewhere without being applied.

only delete the $GetCurrent folder, when you run the disk cleanup shortcut as admin, check all the boxes, then let it do its thing, it will get rid of the $WINDOWS.~BT folder and the Windows.old folder and save you lots of space.

When I run that shortcut as an administrator, nothing happens. When I run it normally, I can see some options of things I can delete but those folders are not part of any of those options.

If I do Win+R and run cleanmgr, I can see more option for the clean up, and it also shows me their size, but no options is in the size of a GB, so I can tell those folders are not in it... so... what then? Delete manually?

UPDATE: I somehow managed to trigger a re-scan of the cleanable elements in my computer in the cleanup tool, and the temporary and previous Windows installations are now showing up, and I removed them. All good now, thanks for the help, you're awesome!

great news! For me, if I run it normally, it quickly scans and finishes, if I run it as admin, it actually deletes stuff and takes ages for the progress bar to finish
