I've encountered this weird quasi sleep/hibernate/awake state on my laptop many times now.
The first time it happened was a few months ago when I was playing ut2004. After a few hours of gaming, the laptop screen suddenly went black and the keys/touchpad didn't respond to anything. The wifi/bt led lights were still on and my powerlight and hd indicator showed the the laptop was still on. The only way to get out was to hold down the power button. I'm guessing this was to prevent overheating on my m1330.

Now, this problem occurs about 40% of the time when I close my laptop's lid. It is set to go into sleep mode and most of the it does go into sleep mode. But other times, it goes into that weird black screen with nonresponsive keys mode thus causing me to have to hold the power button to power it down.

Is there a name for this state? Anyway to fix this?

If I'm correct, this is what the other states are:
Sleep-Very low power usage which can be quickly resumed
Hibernate-computer is off but can be quickly resumed

It could be in a crashed state. As in: the video driver has crashed or froze, so all you see is a black screen. If you can guess what the screen is supposed to be displaying (e.g., plain desktop), you may be able to shut Windows down by pressing appropriate keys "blindfolded", but that'd likely be tricky. To confirm if my hypothesis is correct: does the Caps Lock key still work in this state (i.e., is the keyboard functional)? Is the HDD light flashing/blinking as if there's some activity?

Sometimes there some hd activity but usually there isn't.

I've checked, it's not trying to display a desktop.
Pressing the keyboard only makes that vista "ting" sound. the sound that occurs when you sucessfully login through a fingerprint or when do a invalid command

    Hey!

I'm also having the sames issues with my Dell XPS M1330. When doing graphics heavy tasks for 2hrs +, the screen will go black, as explained in above post. I purchased it late Nov 07.

When i leave my laptop on overnight to download torrents etc. I set it to "do nothing" when i close the screen. I'll wake up the next morning and my laptop will be in the same black screen mode.

The only way to fix it seems to be... holding down the on/off button and restarting.

Maybe there is some issue with this model? I hope someone can help me..

    Thanks.

    David.

My computer will not start working again without a reboot..

Ive left the black screen (its looks like ur display has turned off) for few mins to see what happens. But still nothing. Its not bothering me much. Do u think i should talk to dell about this??

Just a quick search of the web and the forums shows some users getting crazy lines and stuff on there m1330 screens. Maybe this issue is related?

    Thanks

    anyone else getting these issues??

Yes. It's Graphics issue and better check for your manufacturer website for any Graphics and BIOS update.
