So this is the first laptop I've really used properly with Windows 7.

In Windows XP, I had my laptop configured like so:

When I shut the lid - hibernate
When I press the power button - ask me what to do

Now either I'm being extraordinarily dense, or there's no way to set that second option in Windows 7. ? They expect me to use the mouse?

Someone please tell me I'm being stupid...

    You're being stupid. :p

Click the start button and search "Power Options". Right there on the left are the two options you want.

I think you misunderstand me - sorry if I was unclear. (unless you did understand what I mean, and mine doesn't have options it should?)

I can go to Power Options.

I can see settings for what will happen when I press the power button, or close the lid.

However the list of options consists of do nothing, sleep, hibernate or shut down. There is no 'ask me what to do'.

Under XP, I had it set up like that because I usually closed the lid to hibernate, but infrequently used all the other settings (restart, sleep, shut down, log off). It was handy having access to a list of those with a push of the power button, and frustrating that I can't seem to be able to do the same under Windows 7.

D'oh! Look who is stupid now...

A quick look around and it seems there is no support for that option. Maybe a 3rd party program can emulate that?

Have had a more in depth look through some Google results (I wasn't caffeinated enough last night so just asked the question here in the hope someone would give me a quick answer), and it turns out that this definitely isn't possible. The functionality was removed starting with Vista. How utterly ridiculous.

I haven't found an obvious 3rd party solution, so I will have a play around with the registry. I refuse to believe it's impossible to hack something together.

Anyone else interested in this functionality? Or am I the only person that ever used it?
