I had my laptop stolen recently, and I've been trying to figure out what I can legally do about my copy of windows and MS Office. I still have the OEM Windows XP Pro installation disk that came from Gateway, but I've been told that this won't work on whatever new laptop I purchase because it was bought as a part of that original laptop and will only function legally on that machine. Has anyone had any experience with this? I also had a copy of Office Ultimate that i got through their college student promotion, but that was bought separately so I'm pretty sure that I can ask for a new product key from MS and reinstall on my new computer whenever it arrives...

You're probably out of luck in regards to both products. I doubt MS would do anything. You might want to check on the MS Office key you have since you may have bought a license which allows you to install Office on a set number of machines. About Windows, since you have to get a new laptop anyway, I wouldn't really bother with getting some kind of compensation from MS (which I doubt you can get).

OEM is tied to the original computer...MS isn't going to budge an inch.

Imagine people claiming the same thing happened to you. MS won't know the truth from a lie. I do feel sorry for you though. Have you claimed it on your homeowners insurance to be replaced?
