No there isn't. How do you accidently click the Shutdown button? Just don't click it, or change the shutdown icon to standby.

    but thanks. :)

    Some solutions are:

    1. Use stand by
    2. Use hibernate
    3. Use sleep
    4. Make a task sheet for things you need to do before shutting down
    5. Leave computer on

Ive done that a couple times. :p

Sometimes if you start the Task Manager right after pressing Shut Down, a confirmation will appear asking you if you want to terminate the process to shut down, or to abort.

I don't. I'd hate to be nagged every time I shut down if I really want to shut down. Besides, once Windows begins it's shutdown process and starts stopping services, you can't really just be like "oops, just kidding, I need to use this again). Windows would have to re-load those services, start up programs, etc.

You'd be better of making the default "sleep", not "shut down".

I wouldn't want to confirm shutdown every time either, but maybe just hit a shortcut to stop it once it begins. I have wondered about this before, but never bothered to look into it.

Never tried this, but it is worth a shot.

if you can, press start type cmd fast, press and hold shift and ctrl, and then press enter. once the console pops up, write shutdown -a and press enter.

if you get that done fast enough you cancel the shutdown. but i guess you wont be able to handle that fast enough :)

but else, yes, how do you accidentally press that button? :)

I don't think aborting shutdown is a good idea. It may work if done very quickly, but some services are bound to have been stopped by then, and hopefully you don't need them to keep doing whatever it is that you so urgently need to do.

I think it would be easier to make a shortcut (not unlike the link I posted above) than go through that without running out of time.

I don't really press it accidentally, and I never said it was a good idea to abort the shutdown process, but sometimes I might remember one more little thing that I should do.

i hate shortcuts. they are just much more in the way than useful. espencially if used only once or twice a year.

if i happen to accidently shutdown a system, then it sure won't be the one that has the shortcut on => always know the way that works on every system.

create a shortcut and use this as command

    Code:
    shutdown -a
this should abort the Shutdown but beware its advisable to abort a initiated shutdown and somehow you stopped then you need to logoff and login again for the process start again

Just make the power button on your computer put your computer to sleep instead of shutdown. Then just press the power button instead of going through the start menu.

I though you couldn't run anymore process when shutdown has started. Many times, an application crashed on shutdown and I tried to run Task Manager or cmd to force shutdown but I got a message that the process couldn't start because the system was shutting down.

How about this idea: a small application that has a timer on it to perform the shutdown. Once the timer hits zero, the shutdown process will commence. If the user presses a button before the timer hits zero, then the shutdown process is canceled. It could be a SideBar gadget even, if people use that still.

I can make such an application tonight when I get home... Although I bet a Google search will find implementations already done for this.
