What's the difference between AIM 6.0 and AIM Triton? They're both recent builds and they have the same feature sets. The only difference I see so far is a different GUI. So, what's the deal?
-
Exactly...
-
triton seems to install a lot more junk.

Here is an excellent alternative. Gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/about.php
You can log on to ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks simultaneously, yes, all at the same time.
Edit:
Its open source so NO bloatware with craptasticly useless features. -
Only good thing about AIM is the free local number, free incomming calls & voice mail. But I seriously hate the bloatware ...After I seen Viewpoint updating itself.(3 months ago) I looked it up and found it belonged to AOL along with a few other spy-ware that came with aim.
I recommend not installing anything from AOL until they get there act together.
You can always use Gaim, which I usually use on Linux. Or get Trillian which I use on windows mostly. -
PS ... If you want AIM without the bloatware ...download this .........

Yes, I use AIM Ad Hack, so I don't get the bloatware that some of the other users on this thread are complaining about.
Now on to answering the actual question....what's the difference between AIM Triton and AIM 6.0? -
WHAT AOL SAYS:
AOL AIM Triton is the next generation release of AOL Instant Messenger. It is an all new user experience with an elegant, tabbed look and feel. New 'Quicknote' feature replaces the initial IM window to provide a snapshot of known contact information about that buddy and give users three choices: launching an IM session, launching an AOL Talk session or sending a mobile text message to a cellular user. The tabbed messaging interface helps users easily transition from text to mobile instant messaging or AOL Talk, and will eventually enable users to launch video IM sessions, share files or images and invite Buddies to play games with one click. A new 'IM Catcher' corrals all messages into a single interface to help users effectively screen and manage their IM sessions with an unlimited number of Buddies.
WHAT AOL REALLY MEANS:
More Bloatware. We plan on fooling users with so called eaisier feautres when it's really a gateway to move in all our spyware and ad's. -
Aim is just filled with crap. Thankfully somebody figured out the ad-removal thing. I hate the ads that talk out of nowhere. Triton is even worse. I rather use msn.
-
Another vote for GAIM. All the features (and more), none of the garbage.

. aim 5.9 was being upgraded into triton 1.xxx - with bundles apps (next generation aim)
. in between there were lots of updated and the revival of aim 5.9 due to complaints
. now it looks like that aol is merging triton into 6.0, so there would/will be only ONE aim
cheers ... -
here's to gaim I will be dling it asap.
as to the spyware.. it doesn't surprise me.. but, erm.. what about the millions of people out there.. who will soon have computers that run slow.. and then ask "why doesn't it work".. all the preps will suffer..
meh.. oh well.. those who aren't literate with computers suffer... in this day and age.. no mercy for the ignorant.. -
i personally use trillian
-
does GAIM actually work now? back in college when I hung out with people that used non-windows OS GAIM was extremely flaky.
-
I never tried GAIM on Linux even though I have Ubuntu installed :\ , but never had any problems with WinOS GAIM and been using it for at least five years now.
-
sso I tried installing the ad-hacked AIM and it didn't work. are there some other steps needed?
-

I also used AIM ad hack after I tried out triton. Worst part is how they have the browser ad popups when you start the program.
I wasn't a big fan of trillian in windows, and I use gaim in linux.
My favorite client to this day is Adium for OS X. Has all the things that were nice with triton (like tabbed browsing and user notes) with none of the crap.
