Hi,
I'm not able to restore the system using the recovery cd's (Wnidows Vista Business) which came with my notebook.
When I received my laptop I setup Vista first, updated the BIOS to the newest version, and then installed Ubuntu and GRUB and it worked flawlessly. After resizing a partiton in Vista, using the disk management tool, I could not boot. I then tried to re-install GRUB using the Ubuntu Live CD but it was not possible.
I tried to use the recovery cd's to re-install a fresh version of Windows Vista to the first partition, but this did not work either - Vista did still not boot. Apparently it does not update the MBR?!
I used a repair cd form EasyBCD to fix the MBR with command /fixmbr.
Now I was able to boot into Vista, BUT after receiving the message that Vista prepared to run for the first time, I received an error saying something about that it could not use the hardware correctly.
I have tried to run the recovery cd's several times after, but still I get an error that it cannot setup Vista.
I have not formatted the harddisk before running the recovery cd's. I don't now if I should do that, since I have partitioned the harddisk? I have two partitions for Windows and two for Ubuntu.
When running the recovery cd's I changed the boot order in the BIOS. Pressing F9 during the logo splash screen isn't any different, right?
I have considered to buy a Windowa Vista OEM dvd. If I use an OEM dvd to install a fresh version of Vista, will that re-install the mbr (As stated earlier, the recovery cd's apparently don't do that?), and will I get options to format the harddisk? Does the OEM version contain the Vista Recovery Environment?
Any help appreciated. TIA!

I’m not familiar with Asus recovery discs, BUT all recovery disks in general should restore a PC no matter what state it is in. If there is nothing to loose, then delete all the partitions and start all over (you can delete/create new partitions from Vista installer)
Also search Asus forum for instructions on how to use recovery disks. -
Hmm, I deleted all partitions except the recovery partition, and created a new NTFS partition. I then installed the recovery disks again, BUT it did not help. The installation could could complete. Damn recovery disks! Maybe it's because I updated the BIOS?!
I bought a Vista OEM version, so now it works, but that costed me 200$ :-(
