I'm finally running the RC on my laptop (in sig). Though when I try to install the ATI Driver via Windows Update, it fails everytime.

I installed the Dell ATI Driver for my system with Vista which seems to work fine, though it's from 2006.

Still, Windows Update informs me of a newer version.

    Any ideas?

I can't. It fails to install. I even tried downloading it from the MS Update Catalog. No luck.

You need to go into the Device Manager and uninstall the driver from there (and choose to delete the INF files when prompted). Dell's installation utility locks you out from updating your drivers from non-Dell sources. Then use the ATI installer. Do NOT use MS Updates, I've never seen that program update a driver correctly.

I only installed the Dell driver AFTER I couldn't install anything else. MS Update or anything.

Alright, then do the same uninstall procedure, then check for new hardware. Keep doing that to blow away any drivers that might still be there.

Also, might want to check out DriverCleanerPro and uninstall any traces of ATI drivers as well. Sometimes files/settings are left behind that cause issues.

AMD (ATI) have moved the x1400 (and other less current cards) to legacy support. This means that they will only release updates that fix bugs. What they really mean is don't expect new drivers ever. Here's what I've tried with the win7 RC (32bit) and my inspiron 9400 with an X1400...

I tried mobility modder with latest Vista/Win7 (non-mobile) drivers. They install fine, but after a restart, I get black screen on my panel. On a separate monitor hooked up the the vga out, I get video just fine, and the driver work perfectly. I tried the next newest driver, over and over until I reached Radeon v8.1 (from january 2008). These work with my 1920x1200 panel. There must be a way to make the newer ones work with the panel, but mobility modder may need to be updated.
So 8.1 is only slightly newer than the 7.11 available from Dell, but for my needs in Solidworks, they are much better. With 7.11, I had faces in my solidworks models appear and disappear.

You can get older versions of Vista32 ATI drivers here.
You can get mobility modder here.

Please post any successes you have. Thanks

    Hope this helps someone.

Dont use mobility modder. I tried that to give a radeon 9600 aero and it never even worked. Here is what i would do. Find some vista or xp drivers for it then do this. Well this is for vista but im pretty sure it works in windows 7. Anyways
    1: Go to device manager
2: click on the graphics card
3: Click on the driver tab then update driver
4: Click "Browse my computer for driver software"
5: Click " Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer"
    6: Click " Have disc "
7: go to the location of the extracted INF file with the driver inside
    8: Click it to open
9: click it on the list then click next and it should install.

This is how i got aero on an nvidia fx5100 go i had to use nvidia 5200 desktop drivers to get it to run but it let me use aero just fine.

Well, I had success with the Vista driver from Dell for the Inspiron 6400, though the driver is from 2006. I was just curious as to if there were any new drivers, or to put it better, NEWER drivers atleast, seeing as how the x1400 is now legacy.

I guess I'll stick with the 2006 driver from Dell. It seems to work just fine. I haven't notices anything weird or unexpected. Thanks for all the great advice though! I'm sure I'm not the only x1400 here at NBR.

Mobility Modder works perfectly for my X1400 on Vista 32bit. It doesn't work with Windows 7 32bit RC and catalyst 8.2 or newer. Actually it does work, in that the drivers install without error, but I get no picture on my 1920x1200 panel, but I do get a picture on a monitor plugged in to the VGA at the back. There is an issue with the internal video feed or a lack of support for the built in panel.
I would love to hear from someone who has an X1400 but has a different LCD panel and see if they have had any success running newer drivers.

BTW Tippey764, I have tried to install the drivers manually, with the same end result. They install fine, need a restart, and when it's supposed to pop up the login screen, the screen goes black. So again I plug in an LCD monitor to the VGA and tried everything to get the panel to come back.
Here's an interesting tidbit too. When I press the power button to put the laptop to sleep, as it's going to sleep, The panel flicks on for half a second before it goes to sleep. When I say it flicks on, I mean with an actual picture in full resolution. There is a minor bug somewhere in the driver that should be easy to fix. The drivers ARE working, just not sending video to my 1920x1200 panel.

    Matt,
Get Catalyst 8.1 drivers here. (assuming 32bit)
Mod them with mobility modder. (get it here.)
These should work for you, they do for me and they are newer than the Dell ones.

What resolution panel do you have? If it's less than 1920x1200 (I assume it is, since yours is a 15" panel). Could you try modding 9.1 to 9.3 and see if they work for you. These install for me but I get no picture on the built in panel. Version 9.4 fail installation (no supported product found).

Have you tried to do my method with diffrent drivers from a diffrent location. Some times when drivers dont work from say HP i hop over to dell and download their drivers just for the INF file.
