I agree with Kasperskey being worth buying. So is AVG. I'm running Kasperskey (purchased) on my desktop and AVG (purchased) on the NB. I'd have to say that AVG is less intrusive (both have firewalls and anti-spyware included) and AVG automatically configures for different connection types (hot spots, wireless in home, wired).

Kasperskey gives you a pop up everytime you run anything that tries to access the registry, and it has a real issue with Documents 2 Go's add-in toolbar in Word. I finally removed it from Word and no more conflicts.

I've read that AOL's Virus Shield is like anything AOL - lots of advertising and by agreeing to use it you have to agree to let AOL share your info. If you can live with it, then it's fine.

Haven't gotten an ad yet. I don't like the Kaspersky Suite, but their AntiVirus scanner is great.

Compatibility, configurability, and catchability. The three "C"s. :)

Compatibility....never had a single compatibility problem with it. It also uses as few resources as I've seen in ANY malware scanner. The Internet Security version uses WAY fewer resources than any other Internet Security Suite too. Ok, maybe that's "compressability) :)

Catchability meaning it catches more malware than any other virus scan. This has been documented in several places.

Configurability, since AVG Free only lets you do one full scan every day (which I hate). Kaspersky along with the free AOL variant allow you to tweak the scanning any way you want (I do critical areas once per week and a full scan once per month, and fill in with manual scans of suspicious objects).

When having a bad virus infection, it's best to use many many programs to delete it.

    I recommend:

Trend Micro Free online scanner (Just watch what you delete)
    Ccleaner
    rootkit revealer
    spy sweeper
    ad-aware
    spybot
    windows defender (yes, very good)
    nod 32
    a-squared

you'll be scanning all day, but hey, you shouldn't have a problem come nighttime.

I say that it's worth buying because it's a good product. The Kasperskey Suite comes with anti-spam and a firewall in addition to the antivirus. A two year subscription and the software together came to around $50 or $60. Not bad. The antivirus program by itself is less expensive.

It does a good job of protecting your system and notifying you when changes are being made that you might not want.

Plus, I'm a big believer in supporting developers who develop good products. Which is also why I no longer support Norton/Symantec. :)
