Because the trial version of Norton Internet Security 2007 was about to expire, I uninstalled it and reverted to AVG Free, which I had used for several years.
However, I noticed my notebook fan constantly running, the CPU running at max when it shouldn't be, and my CPU temp getting pretty hot. I checked the processes and saw the automatic update was "stuck" and would not stop. I uninstalled AVG, reinstalled, and had the same problem after the initial update. I manually stopped the automatic update via Task Manager and the CPU usage went down as well as its temp.
All that to ask, has anyone had a problem with the automatic update running and not stopping?
If I can't get this solved, I may try Avira AntiVir. I tried Avast, but it seems to conflict with CCleaner.
Thanks,
Bill

I am running version 7.5.472 and have no problems (on XP). First, are you using the latest executable when you reinstall? Also, have you used CCleaner after each uninstall to get rid of the leftovers (running it as Administrator)?
Do you have the option of setting AVG to Run As Administrator as well? I recently noticed on a dv2000t w/Business edition that Vista was interfering with the automatic scan feature in AVG Free, this could possibly be interfering with the automatic updates as well. (?) -
I am running 7.5.472, and I did run CCleaner after the install as well as the uninstall and reinstall. However, I did not run it as Administrator. I had noticed that CCleaner had been failing to cleaner 2 or 3 MB. At your suggestion, I ran CCleaner as Administrator and it cleaned completely.
I am going to reboot and see what happens. Thanks.

This has been a problem since back in the beta builds of Vista, where CCleaner is unable to function completely without "special" permission. The same was happening with CPU-Z as well, as it was unable to get accurate readings on hardware.

After rebooting, AVG appears to be running as it should. The automatic update, at least, is not showing up in the Processes under Task Manager, the fan is behaving normally since the CPU is not under stress, and the heat is normal. Thanks again.

No problem. Glad to hear you got it working.

Oh well, I congratulated myself too soon. I shut down my computer last night and rebooted this afternoon, only to recognize the fan was working way too hard way too soon and CPU usage in the red zone. I checked out the processes and found AVG's automatic update "stuck" again. I closed it and the computer returned to normal.
I may give AntiVir a shot.

Either that, or disable automatic updates and run it manually once per day (I usually end up doing it myself most of the time). Either some software is conflicting with the AVG updater (like your firewall), or the current version of AVG is simply buggy on Vista.

Good idea. Right now, I'm running the Windows firewall. I haven't read of others having this problem, so I guess it's not a AVG/Vista problem. Rather, AVG is evidently conflicting with something else on my computer.
