I have not tried the free AVG, but it has to be better than norton's AV from Symantec as norton's misses a lot of viruses that other AV software finds and it uses a ton of CPU overhead.

I use AVG free edition and so far, so good. No viruses yet (that I know of, anyway). However, I keep my OS up to date and don't open/run attachments on suspicious mail.

AVG works great for me. I like it better than norton and mcaffee.

On my laptop, with ~52 GB of files (40 GB are media files)AVG takes about 15 minutes to do a complete scan.

I find McAfee acceptable, even though their customer service leaves much to be desired. I have yet to try AVG, although it is high on my list for testing.
I would definitely steer clear of Norton, as it uses amazing amounts of system resources better allocated elsewhere. -
I just recently switched to AVG from McAfee. I like AVG quite a bit. It uses much less resources than my previous antivirus. So far, I don't have any complaints with it. Plus, it's free!!

I recently changed to Avast free version from Norton and I'm happy. I couldn't update install or uninstall Norton Anti-virus and after removing it from the registry i downloaded and install Avast. I ran a scan using norton and it found 0 viruses and then with avast it found 60.
