I was looking through the GAMESPOT forums and I found a post by a particular member that got my attention:

I hope these claims are NOT true. But what if they are? hmm
Just thought would be an interesting topic of discussion.
Oh forgot to add that I use AVG myself.
-
i seriously doubt that claim is true...
-
his boss is a lieing.
hey look I'm a programmer and I say Windows Defender is crap. -
-
With AVG - I doubt that the claims are true, but Avast IS better as it found a virus on my computer when I installed it that AVG didn't!
-
ps; when you quote remove the extra "a" ok. ty ^^
-
Well, AVG has never found a virus on my computers except when I download something dodgy like a game crack so I don't have to carry my discs with, and scan it manually. I agree that the GameSpot guy is insane.
Though he is right in that Avast! isn't a bad anti-virus itself. -
yet another example of someone quoting someone quoting someone who may have said something who heard something from someone who might have said something ad infinitum ad nauseum.

Yeah, I'm sure that guy's claims are bogus, however, AVG has been consistantly rated as one of the worst of the free anti-virus applications...and Avast! is usually ranked just marginally better. I use AntiVir, which is usually rated #1 or #2 of the free offerings.
Although I've seen several such reviews, here's one example:

This article is slightly out of date, the new v7.0 of AntiVir is out now. It uses very little in system resources, scans far faster than AVG or Avast!, and has a nice new clean and easy-to-use interface.
AVG is widely popular when it comes to free AV programs, but if you do some net research on it, it's generally considered to be crap by the people who test these things. -

The only way to prove whether claims like these are true or not is to some research using "reputable" sources. AVG and Avast are the best free AV scanners. They may not be more than 90% accurate, but the majority of the time are sufficient for most casual users. -
AVG not so good?
