I am looking for a free program to put a password on my External HD.

I want to just be able to put a password on it, and maybe a username, so when you plug it in to the computer, it ask's for the password/username.

I have seen a few programs like this, but only trial versions. Is there a free one that is dependable?

    Thanks.

I'm guessing you don't have Vista Business or Ultimate?

The best suggestion I can offer is Truecrypt: http://www.truecrypt.org/

It will let you encrypt the drive (or part of it) so that any files can only be accessed after the input of a password. It's not quite what you are asking for but would be much more secure than password protecting an unencrypted file.

There's lots more clever stuff in it if you're planning on becoming James Bond....

I have a TrueCrypt volume on my USB drive. Came as a part of Geek.Menu (free USB app suite).

AFAIK truecrypt would require you to load that software on every computer you plug the usb drive into in order to access it. I use it myself. Fast, free, secure.

Truecrypt is available as a portable app. That way, it runs off of the USB drive on whichever computer it is plugged into.

Does Vista Business do this? How does it work?
