Hi, I recently purchased a Dell Xps16 with 1080p. I was trying Windows Media Center that was already inside and it worked particularyl well as both video and audio. Now, the problem are two: WMC is somewhat too easy and somewhat too complicated. Second problem is, when I had a format that WMC didn't support I downloaded VLC which supports many formats but clearly on the files that both player can play WMC does a better job. The video is crispier and the audio is clearer and better stereo. I need to choose a player that will have the quality of WMC but simple and that contains many formats. I need great audio quality because I'm a musician. Video also because I bought a nice screen and I want to see what i got.
I heard about XBMP, BSplayer and KMplayer (the korean one) but no idea.
Thanks![]()
P.S. I am not against a center thing like WMC but really Wmc is for people who can't use computer and the menu takes forever. Need something quicker!

I personally use the Klite Codec Pack+ Media Player Classic. Very lightweight, and after installing the codec pack I've not had a single file not play.
-
VLC is probably one of "the best", but it depends on your needs. I use VLC because it never fails to play a given video file, though it has a very ugly user interface.
-
Yes you are right, VLC never fails, also Mediaplayer classic. My problem is not really the interface, but when I see the videos on Windows media center both audio and video quality is better on the same video. I'm looking for quality, I want to use these 64bit or at least as good quality as Windows Media Center
-
Why not use Window Media Player? Just install a codec pack if you can't play some files (like .avi) out of the box.
-
Windows Media Player an Vista Codec Pack - works very well for me at least.
-
VLC is more responsive than KMPlayer from my personal experiences.
Is WMP any good? -
I use KMPlayer and haven't had a problem playing any video files I throw at it and it looks pretty slick compared to VLC. Whatever works for you dude!
-
Do not install any codecs
Just do this: download Media Player Classic: Home Cinema.
Trust me that is the only thing you'll need to play any video.
I have tried a lot of different player such as VLC, Media player Classic, Win Media player, Divx.........
Standalone codecs aren't good from my experience. I was recently struggling with some players after I installed Win7.
Just download MPC:HC

I have GOM Player and K-Lite codecs. GOM Player plays a lot by itself, K-Lite was so I can see video thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
-
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack here.....plays any file you throw at it....real media...quicktime files,.....avi, divx, 3ivx, flv, mp4, etc....
-
CCCP + Reclock + MadVR + Real Alternative(rarely used) etc lol in signature
-
WMP 11 + Vista Codec pack works fine for me. I like VLC too. GOM, KM players are my other options.
-
Like Maximus i use Klite codec pack, which includes MPC... Plays anything, fast and snappy player.. havent used anything else for years

ratchetnclank Notebook Deity
Songbird & vlc for videos.
That is all. -
Go with the classics they're the best in picture and sound. I've tried them on different Windows including 7 and they work flawless all the time.
3 files is all you need, I always get them from the free codecs website because they have the latest updates:
FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2009-09-17 SSE
Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 [2009.07.06] for Win2000/NT/XP/Vista
AC3 Filter 1.63b
Check them out. They're all pro tools, look at the options and possibilities and compare with other players, nothing comes even close and best of all they're free. Don't forget to change file association... Right click on video file in explorer and then choose "Open with.." and then check "Always open with". -
I use the K-Lite pack and Media Player Classic HC. Make sure to enable video-acceleration if you want to make use of your graphics card for h264 or VC-1 content etc.
-
There's another option in FFDShow video configuration --> Decoder Options --> Number of decoding threads. It's set to 1 by default but you can set it to 2 if you have a dual core or 4 if you have a quad processor. That's for h264 and mpeg 1/2 decoding. Takes full advantage of your CPU. You want to skip DX support unless you want something like subtitles, DX slows the player down and eats more cpu.

I use Winamp as default for most of my A/V files. WMP works just fine for DVDs. I only use VLC for files that I can't seem to play on other players, whether it be a certain file extension, corrupted, or whatever.

Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
-
the KMplayer for videos Zune software for audio
-
So, I compared them almost all and in the end the player which fits me most is KMplayer. It's just so plenty of options and I could manually get the audio quality I was looking for, the quality that only Windows Media Center has (in my ear's opinion, at least)
Thanks to everyone, It was a very helpful confrontation! -
is there any codec which allows windows media player 12 in windows 7 play .flv files?
-
WMP here. Plays all the files I need it to.
-
WMP with CCCP codecs
-
Does CCCP Codecs work with windows media player?
-
Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. Pretty decent format support and hardware acceleration.
Used to use VLC but needing to play 1080p Blu-ray/HD-DVD rips on a Sempron 3200 1.8GHz with a GeForce 8500GT decided it for me.
