I've been using my laptop for about 3 months now with no issues to be found in terms of stability or otherwise. One night, bringing my computer out of hibernation, the computer automatically shut down. I booted up again but it took much longer for windows to respond to any of my actions. I tried to restart, but windows failed to respond and the computer was left saying "logging out" for about thirty minutes before I decided to just power off manually. I powered back on again and decided to see what the issue is. Quite frankly, I have no clue. Here are some of the symptoms:
1: IE refused to log onto the internet despite Firefox being able to
2: Networking in Windows also seems to be unresponsive
3: System Restore does not work
4: All types of safe mode do not function
5: Thinkvantage Access Connections shows a successful connection to my router, but the Windows service for networking does not
    6: Sidebar is unresponsive
7: Task Manager does not work - it opens the green graph in the system tray but fails to show any cpu activity and refuses to open. task manger will also open several instances in the system tray after the first failed attempt
8: System shutdown and restart do not work

Any suggestions? I feel like this is a Vista issue, but possibly a hardware one?

First thing I would do is clean install.

Ugh. I was hoping it wouldn't have to come to that.

I've been using SPI since it came out. It's just that this issue came out of nowhere. I've never had a lockup, freeze, or even blue screen on my Thinkpad since I've gotten it. Is there any chance that this could be a virus? All I've got on my computer is anti-spyware, but no anti-virus software. If this is a potential virus, what software is recommended?

if you can though, just backup files and do a clean install (its better anyway)
