A client of mine is looking to access her Office PC from her notebook and home PC. Was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for this? I have used Laplink in the past, but it has been a while since I used it and was wondering if there is anything better out there. Any help appreciated.

I use ssh. When you specify the -X and -C options, it works quite well.

This, of course, relies on the operating system in question running X and generally being Linux-like. You didn't specify what operating system you are using.

I hear ads for gotomypc.com all the time. I have no idea how well it works.

I use Log Me In. There is a free version that works great for my needs.

Go To My PC is pretty solid for an enterprise level need.

Logmein (free addition) gets annoying with its restrictions. It's probably decent when you're paying :p. Gotomypc now comes from Citrix which has a very solid rep. with this stuff. I'm a tightVNC man myself. Works like a charm if you know what you're doing and it's as cheap as they come... free. Just remember that all VNCs are not inherently secure and some work needs to be put into securing them if they go with one on the free options and that's something your client needs.

Logmein free and its older brother, Logmein Pro are probably the best I have used. The good things about the Logmein are that you can access your computer via web browser, so the cilent accessing the computer need not install any software at all, they just need the java runtime environment, as some computers have restrictions on what can be installed or executed if that is a public computer or if like in my case many ports are being blocked so any vnc program out there is useless for me, so that would eliminate the use of any vnc program, not sure about Gotomypc though. The Pro version is a lot better in my opinion, it has many options, you can use the printer that is connected to the client machine to print out documents on the remote machine, you can use on the fly file transfer, and then one of the cooler features is that you can invite people to join in on a session to view what you are doing on the remote machine, something that is also accessed via web browser, again no installing, the person could just have guest privileges and view what you are doing or you could give the person full access to edit files along with you, but be careful who you give this to because once that person takes over they could cause massive damage, or headaches if they want to fool around with you. Logmein is great and for a person who needs to be constantly on there "work" computer or hates using public computers it is worth it and the Pro version is even better for a person who needs all those features.

I used to use RealVNC, but its lack of encryption revealed its weakness when my computer almost got hacked. Thank goodness I was around to see someone download a trojan for me. I've since switched to UltraVNC where I'm using the DSM plugin with a 128bit encryption key.

You are meant to use RealVNC over an encrypted tunnel such as an SSH tunnel.
