I want to upload music to an ipod w/o using itunes. is it possible? if so how?
the search function did not really help me here.

Yes, it's possible.
I used to use Songbird, when I had an ipod.
I know you can also use some other programs.
I believe Foobar will do it, and I think you can get a plugin for WinAmp to do it as well. -
Yamipod or Media Monkey work. I believe there is a WinAmp plug-in as well, but I have not used it. With Yamipod, the software is on the iPod itself, so you can play from any computer you plug into.

If you're only using it for music, Sharepod is a great itunes alternative. It even has a feature to make it so you can copy your whole library of songs from your ipod to your PC. Sharepod can be downloaded here: http://www.getsharepod.com/download/
However, as for a real itunes replacement, I would use Floola. It's great, and easy to learn compared to itunes. Also, it even has a feature to make a song start and end at certain times and to save it that way, so that if you don't like a part of a song, you can make it start after or before and end after or before without any editing. I usually use Sharepod for transferring my songs to my computer as a backup, and Floola as my main itunes replacement. Floola can be downloaded here: http://www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/index.php?page=download Just choose your operating system, and then choose whether you want a regular download or bit torrent download of Floola. Good luck - Brian.
Edit: Both are free, so don't worry about any trials or anything. Also, they don't have any adware or spyware. -

I use iTunes for PC-->iPod and Yamipod for PC<--iPod

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll give Sharepod a go, unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Sharepod gave an error on my system and would not run.
Yamipod worked perfect. -
