I tried to do a system restore on my Acer laptop using the recovery DVD that I burned after purchasing the machine. Unfortunately the Vista 32 Home recovery got to about 60% then stopped due to an unknown error. Serveral attempts to restore failed at the same stage leading me to think the DVD image was corrupt.

So I installed XP but then discovered a lack of drivers on the ACER website- DOH!

So next I tried to install Vista 64 Enterprise but have not been able to successfully install SP1 - the installer throws an error at the end even though I have applied the pre-requisit pre SP1 hotfixes. Then when the laptop reboots, the Windows install gets corrupt. Has anyone experienced this problem?

I have even tried installing Windows 7 - but that throws the error that the RPC Server is unavailable when the logon prompt appears and I cannot get past that into Windows.

I have applied that latest Bios (when XP was installed on the machine) and set the HD setting to IDE (not AHCI).

I'd be interested to here from anyone who has experience the same problem or knows of any compatability issues.

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums, sfothersgill!
I don't know why you've got your HD back on IDE - that's only needed for Windows XP, and only as a workaround when you don't want to slipstream SATA drivers into the XP install CD.
Otherwise, I'm stumped. If you want, I can move this to the Windows OS forum - they'd be a lot more experienced in this area than me.

Yes - please move the thread if another forum may be able to help.

Update - I've run a system repair and when the laptop reboots it immediately blue screens. In safe mode the last driver listed is crcdisk.sys. The laptop has 3GB RAM and a SATA disk - I've seen a thread that suggests a hotfix for Vista with more than 3GB RAM and other threads that suggest removing some memory. Will give these a try and post the results.

In the meantime - have other people had similar experiences?
