I bought a second hand Acer Travelmate 7720G with Vista on it, my friend tried to downgrade to XP but said he couldn't unless he would flash the BIOS and he didn't want to risk that.

What could be the reason that this is not possible or is my friend an amateur ?

I don't see why he would need to flash the BIOS to install XP.

If he has a SATA HDD he may have come up with an error where the XP installer cannot find a HDD, if this is the case, then XP won't install, as it doesn't come with sata drivers. That would be my guess why XP won't install.

You would need to do one of 2 things

Create a custom XP disk with sata drivers for the laptop slipstreamed into it. Guide Here

    Or

Go into the bios, set the Sata Mode from ACHI to IDE, this should then enable you to install XP, once installed you can then install sata drivers within XP, then revert the Sata Mode in the bios back to ACHI.

There is no point downgrading nowadays... Vista is safer, more robust, easier to use, stabler... XP is an outdated system that would have died as it should have if not for the launch issues Vista had. It's a great OS now.
