I've used Windows Vista's Backup & Restore feature and it worked marvelously on all the times I've used it. The only gripe I have is that it is rather slow.

There are free utilities that are out there that work just as well, such as Macrium's Reflect which is what I'm currently testing out now. The backup part worked pretty quickly, but I have yet to try a restore attempt with it.

There are other utilities listed in the Ever Growing Free Windows Software List here on NBR.

it mirrors by itself, so no need for that. that way, you're flexible in pluging in and out all sort of hdd's of all sizes. it handles it all by itself. that's a never yet expirienced liberty compared to NAS systems.

you have two 1tb disks in? put in a new fresh 2tb disk, and then say, it should spit out one of the 1tb disks. it then transfers all data as needed, rearanges, and bam, you have another tb of data in your system. or let the other 1tb disk in, and now you have without any fiddling, right from the start, 2tb of redundant data. the two 1tb and the one 2tb disk will each have one copy, and it will automatically resync all data to the 2tb disk.

yep, that's for remote accessing from outside the home network. and yep, it wasn't that easy (isn't that easy to code an automatic setup for all sort of routers anyways :))
but now with powerpack 2 it should be much better.
still, it's not one of it's primary features (that's backup and localnet filesharing and autoextendable storage).
haven't tested it as i haven't had a supported router (but at my new appartment i should now be able to test it. i got my two 1tb disks for a start.. now i need a nice casing and place for the server.. + internet)

VHP can not get accessed trough remote desktop, just as XP Home can not as well => you can not from externally connect to your home server, and then switch onto your moms desktop to help her, if she has VHP. yes, that's true. and i think it's sad that VHP doesn't have that feature. how's win7 in that regard?
but "not supported" isn't true. everything else works perfectly well. but so far, one has to revert to another remote desktop solution to access WHP. sad fact, unrelated to WHS.
64bit os work without a problem. win7 works without a problem (but doesn't get reported as win7 yet. win7 crashed on me in a form it couldn't repair itself. whs could restore it without problem).

    have fun :)

hope i could help a bit.
