If I do a clean install of Vista on my intended SSD can I activate it with the OEM key which came with the laptop( it says " Upgrade vista" in my system info).
    OR
Is it better to clone the C drive only as my intended SSD is going to be only 60GB, will I have problems cloning only the C drive?

Yes the OEM COA is in case you don't have your discs and it didn't come preimaged from the factory. I would do a clean install.

should activate just fine, and hey just don't wipe your old one until you have the new one up and running the way you like. You can always do the backup plan if it doesnt work

Thanks for the quick responses guys, do I really need to disable system restore?
Couldn't I use a minimum amount of disk space for system restore(say about 300MB) because I find SR very handy at times.
Thanks NotEnoughMinerals for that advise, yes I'll remove my current HD and safely keep it in an enclosure and once I'm happy with my new drive I'll use it as an external HD.

I have an SSD that I plan to upgrade to soon and will keep system restore enabled. It may be a few extra writes but I don't mind it for having the security of being able to restore if anything screws up real bad. The sentiment of disabling system restore is a more a storage issue/saving writes effort rather than a performance issue so it's up to you.

I plan to also put my original disk in an enclosure and use it for backup and storage of data to keep my SSD clutter down. I also made the eRecovery disks and will format the original disk and do a restore for putting it back when I sell or give away the lappy and move on to another in the future.

Clean install of the SSD is the only way to go.

Well maybe if you would stop watching illicit materials on the interwebs you wouldn't get those nasty infections :D

Besides my SSD's are in gaming rigs, so if need be I will wipe them and reinstall Windows.

Thanks for all the inputs, could someone please tell me whether I need to switch to AHCI mode in BIOS, I'm asking this because my Advanced options are locked by Acer and do not know how to switch to AHCI mode in my Acer laptop running Vista.

I didn't look at the pictures before. :)

That Upgrade Vista is a link that takes you to feature where you can upgrade to better version of Vista. For a fee of course.

For example from Home Basic to Home Premium, or Pro to Ultimate.
