I'm using Vista Home Premium. I normally use Firefox, but every now and then I need to use IE7.

However, I cannot view any ActiveX material in IE7 (or IE8).

I click yes when websites prompt me to install the ActiveX control.

But then I either get a box with a red cross in it where the ActiveX is supposed to load, or an error message such as "The ActiveX control could not be loaded", or "ActiveX is not supported" etc.

To troubleshoot this, I've set all of my ActiveX settings to allow everything. It still hasn't helped.

Windows Update reports that everything is up to date and has installed correctly.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

You can try 1 of 2 things or both:

. download and install Visual Basic Runtime for Vista

    . update your Java

    cheers ...

qhn, thanks very much for your suggestions. I hadn't thought of doing that.

I tried both of your suggestions, but ActiveX still doesn't work.

Is there anything else I can do to get it to work (apart from a complete reinstall)?

When I originally changed from IE7 to IE8 I had some Flash troubler - the solution was to completely unistal Flash and reisntal it.

This may work for you and your other ActiveX stuff too.

    Thanks for the further suggestions.

I already uninstalled and resinstalled Flash (although I used to Adobe automatic uninstaller, so I might see if a manual uninstall helps).

qhn, the suggestion on that website doesn't work for me.

I've spent hours trying to fix this problem. It's rather annoying....

On Flash - I had to use the Adobe Flash unistaller first - just installing new Flash didn't work.

Also, is it all ActiveX or only Flash?

    Neither Flash nor ActiveX works.

Flash used to work in IE7, but I uninstalled it (however, it works fine in Firefox).

Basically, anything that requires me to click "yes" to install ActiveX component will not work at all. This includes all sites using Flash, which ask me if I want to install the Adobe Flash Player Installer (as an ActiveX Control).

I click "yes" as many times as it asks me, and then it just doesn't work.

    Sounds like my Flash problem...

See if you can completely unistal every ActiveX element, maybe even restart - and then try to reinstal them again.

There must be a proper way to do it - but I don't know how.

Thanks - I've been using that page throughout this problem, as a test site.

It asks me if I want to install the add-on. I click yes. Then it always says: "ActiveX is not supported".

Which according to that website means that "your browser doesn't recognize ActiveX at all".

I wish there was a way to fix this without reinstalling Vista.

You're sure ActiveX isn't disabled in Internet Options?
I think that can be done...

    SOLVED

    Guys, I solved the problem.

My anti-virus software (ESET NOD 32) was preventing ActiveX from working properly.

I uninstalled it and ActiveX works fine now. I think I'll look for different AV software.

    Thanks for everyone's suggestions!

    Possibly just a setting...

Personally I use, like and recommend Kaspersky :)
