When God got his new Acer Aspire 7520 laptop with Windows Vista Premium, it used approx. 750 megs of ram after startup. With tweaking, God has brought it down to a real world value of under 600 megs following startup.

God has Wifi and Aero turned on. God disabled services & programs guilty of gluttony. God turned off indexing, UAC, and auto Windows Update. God does not have an instant messaging program installed. God killed Norton. God has 2 GB of shared ram in his system.

God wants to know how much memory your Vista uses after startup. Version doesn't matter.

Do a search for BlackViper he has lists of services that can be safely turned off to improve performance.. Another note why would you choos that user name. It is very offensive to some of us. also note that the real GOD always has the best of the best. (which Acer is not even close to the bottom of the barrel)

This is weird. Immediately after start up the RAM usage in mine jumps to 900MB+ and then stabilizes at 550-600 MB.

I don't remember the amount of ram, but it's about 35%of 2 GB available

edit: just restarted, 28%, or 580MB after all necessary processes/programs are loaded.

Well, with a main memory usage of merely 206MB I think I probably have the lowest.

Very offensive? To who exactly? I'm not at all offended, and I doubt that many people are. I think in all likelihood that only a few select individuals such as yourself are actually offended, assuming you are of course, which I would, based on your comment.

You're offended because he considers himself to be a god? I think hes entitled to call himself god if he likes and establish his own religious group of followers if he so wishes, just as you're entitled to join any religious group you so wish, should that be anglican, catholic or whatever.

Considering how many religious groups there are, and that you're offended by anyone who believes differently to you, you must have a hard time. If I was to be offended by anyone who believed differently to me then surely I should be offended by your comment. Surely that as an atheist believing that there is no god, I should be offended by your comment suggesting that there is a real god. You probably think that that would be silly though, as surely you have the right to believe whatever you may, and to express those beliefs. So surely what you said is also silly, otherwise that would be rather hypocritical of you, don't you think?

A better poll would be to have what percentage of physical memory is being used because Vista will purposefully use more RAM if it has more RAM available. So almost by definition, a system with 4 GB will use more RAM that that with 1 or 2 GB because Vista has the "unused RAM is wasted RAM" mentality and will use around half of what's available (generally).

That's definitely Vista...I guess that's one way to get its RAM usage down, only giving it 256 MB to work with.

I got mine as low as 425 MB at startup with 2 GB of RAM installed, but after I installed all my programs and ran it awhile it didn't like to go much below 600 MB even tweaked. So I voted 600 MB or less. Could've voted 500 or less, but I don't have any screenshots to back it up. I think I even got it to the 390's a few times by killing processes, but again I didn't take a screenshot so no point to posting it.

Hmm, maybe that's what I'll do with my Vista license...see how low I can get memory usage in a Virtual Machine...

Awesome user name, by the way. Might become one of my favorites ever.

How do I run with only 256MB of ram? Well Vista is probably making extensive use of the page file. I also don't play any games.

Just to be clear, I'm running 256MB of ram, even though it only shows 255MB, why I'm not sure and nor do I care. You'll find its using 206MB and that 206MB of 256MB is approximately 80%. I can also assure you that that is Vista, not XP, Linux, Mac nor any other operating system mimicking the gui of Vista.

I've already tried Apollo13, that screenshot is of Vista running on a virtual machine, and thats the main memory usage after a fresh install and boot. You may be able to lower it after tweaking but I doubt by much, and as far as I know you can't lower the allocated ram either, because I've tried and Vista fails to boot below 256MB.

vista uses ram like it's a toy. Checked Opera yesterday with only 2 tabs loaded - 240 mb were allocated to it. For XP, the most Opera used was below 100 (loaded with literally hundreds of tabs).
    >1000mb, idle

This poll is similar because it shows the percentage of total RAM Vista uses, not just the absolute number (which can be deceiving because of people with different RAM amounts).

I have about 1.4GB in use right now, with AVG and uTorrent running in the background and a few tabs open in FF. I know popular opinion is to think you're "improving system performance" by killing caching services that "use up RAM," but that's not even a little bit true. Read up on how modern OSes handle memory management. Linux, for example, uses 90+% of your RAM all the time no matter how much you have to store cache data, which is collected while your system is idle from a MRU list. If something more pressing but less-often-used needs the RAM, old cache is dumped to make room. Thus, the hard drive spins less during day-to-day activities and you spend less time waiting on your HD and more time actually using your computer.

Linux and OSX just choose to report in the system info dialogues the amount of RAM in use minus the cache. Windows just reports total in-use physical memory. While it is true that Windows is less efficient with memory management than OSX or Linux, it's not as bad as one might think.
