Adobe Reader X is available. I don't know what has changed and improved.

Let us know what you think. I switched to Foxit Reader along time ago. I found Adobe Reader to be a resource hog.

Thanks for the update
No I don't think I'll spend a cent on Adobe X Pro though... (got 9 as par of the Web Premium Suite) - maybe when CS6 comes out I might get the then current version
Edit:
Oh dear...
Apparently the icons were either developed by a 5 year old and about 3 crayons or were found in the archives and date back to Windows 95...
They are UGLY!!!!
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Else - very fast when it starts up -
-
But yes, it's fast and neat.
Thanks for the update, btw.
Cheers -
I still have the Adobe 9 installers bunkered- when I download such installers, I like to keep them
On that note though... I suppose the icons are based on some sort of image file... I can't imagine them being drawn from formulae every time, so if you could figure out where and how they are stored, they could be changed.
Edit:
Some symbols - albeit not all - are here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\Tracker
On another notewhoever had 9 and didn't uninstall it, there are about 50MB of files left over - I think they are junk.
-
One little update:
Firefox 4 Beta 7 integration is beautiful - yes, you have to get used to the lack of visible toolbars, but it's beautiful and quick. -
also x is better than foxit nowadays -
Anyway, I have a doubt: do you know how to save a PDF file, that' opened in the browser? When the cursor moves to the bottom, there is a pop up with the "save" symbol... but I'm not able to click on it.
Any idea, please?
Thanks and Cheers.
Edit:
Ok.. When I clicked on the adobe reader icon / symbol or whatever, the toolbar came up.. but still, I'm not able to click on it or save.... Uffff... I guess I'm missing something here...
I'm able to save through the firefox file menu... but not from within the pdf document toolbar...
And while we are it, how do we make the toolbar go away? I mean, I brought it back by clicking the adobe reader symbol.. but how do we make it disappear?
And are there any keyboard shortcuts? ctrl+s didn't work for me, for example.... -
How to make it disappear - the two arrows facing out on the toolbar - to get the toolbar from the minimalistic mode - click on the Adobe Acrobat icon.
Edit:
Try on this pdf - it definitely works:
http://pdf.zeit.de/wirtschaft/2010-11/irland.pdf -
Strange.
No Detlev.. It didn't work.. here is a cap.
With your pdf link, I see both the toolbar and the pop up panel... when I click nothing happens.. I cannot save or click on any of those icons...
Btw, I just checked on a PC running XP (desktop at work).. and it's working perfectly fine there...
I am thinking if it has got anything to do with any of the addon's that I have... hmmm.... -
Update:
Nope, it doesn't work..
I have checked with multiple PDF's.. different sites.. old and new... the thing doesn't work... Ufffffff...
PS., sorry for this additional post.. couldn't edit the previous one. -
Well, the pdf link I posted definitely works on my laptop and definitely should work - I've been downloading those pdfs for quite some time now, every article I read I download
So my guess is, it must be some other issue.
Either and add-on or maybe a very restrictive AV? -
Boh, I don't know.
I tried in IE. It does not work in IE either. So, it's not just in firefox for me.
Also, when I right click within the pdf document (opened within the browser), the menu that opens up is in a random place... I mean, it doesn't open up where I did the right click.. but it's a bit far off... you get what I mean?
Hmm... I have to look into this... -
-
I know.. I am trying to figure out what' happening.. Also, I'm trying to make a screengrab vid... let me check and show u exactly what happens.
-
Alright.. it doesn't show clearly in the video grab. Anyway, the issue is that.. I don't know.. may be I'll try installing the adobe plugin again? or install adobe reader again?
-
What AV are you using? -
AV - NIS 2011
I'll try reinstalling and let u know how it goes...
PS., will get back with the latest tomo morning. I'm going home now... Cheers -
MSE is fine - I'm pretty sure KIS would be too (downloads work fine else) -
Update:
Nothing. The issue remains. I have tried repairing the install - Did not work. I tried reinstalling - Did not work. I tried disabling / uninstalling some addon's - Did not work.
Wonder what else could be the problem.
Ufff... -
Update:
I tried installing without the AV, just to see... but no use. The issue remains..
btw, now I see the toolbar icons all greyed out
Here is a pic.
I cannot save or print or whatever... uffffff -
Also check through the settings of Adobe Reader when you launch the program separately, but right now I'm a bit lost as to what the cause could be. It seems illogical to me. -
Me too, and I just opened a discussion on the adobe reader forums too, just to see / look around for more info.
Adobe Forums: Adobe Reader X - Firefox integration...
Meanwhile, no.. no paranoid security settings and such.. well, I have No Script, but then it doesn't block those pages or the pdf files..
btw, when you say "keep adobe from downloading", what do you mean?
The installation is fine, the pdf opens fine in the browser (and I just went through the complete check list for opening pdf files in the browser - and it's all fine, enabled, etc etc)...
It's just that I cannot click on the tool bar, and if I do a right click, the right click menu open's up at a random place, far from where I did the right click... same as before...
This is the same problem in IE too.. so, I don't think it's something with the browser.. it's something else, but I am feeling utterly lost...
Update:
I am seeing this issue not only in firefox or IE but also in Google Chrome... -
I suppose it technically downloads a file, even if it's just to it's cache. -
Update:
Alright - I went back to Adobe Reader 9.4.1 and everything is fine.
Browser integration is fine, I can click on the toolbars, I can save, print and everything...
Also, the right click menu pop' up right where the right click was done...
So.... it has got to be something with the integration of reader X with the browser's, isn't it? At least in my case.. though there it seems to be working well for others...
Hmmm..
Boh.. I don't know.. For now I will stick with 9.4.1 and wait to see if there are any fixes.. Or else update to X again, and wait for a fix...????? -
Strange indeed...
If you want to experiment, maybe try uninstalling 9,4 manually then installing X again? (i.e. no upgrade)
Alternatively - just stick with 9,4 for now as it works -
And I just submitted a bug report @ Adobe.. let's see.
I will get back soon with what happened with the manual uninstall of 9.4, manual install of 10...
Thanks and cheers. -
Update:
Ok I uninstalled 9.4 manually and then did a manual install of X, but the issue persists... No change. It does not work properly. There is some serious problem with the browser integration (in my case)...
For now, I think I will go back to 9.4.1 and stick with that... and try Reader X later, in a few days may be...
Cheers... -
I wonder what Adobe will have to say about that. -
i can't stay adobe and their sneaky update software. -
And even if it auto updated - unless someone actually manipulates the update process it will only patch security vulnerabilities. -
Another user with the same / similar problem as what I was experiencing: Look here

Let's see what comes off it
-
Some update on the issue I was having with adobe reader X and firefox integration: Here is the latest. (obviously I haven't seen any solution)
Meanwhile, as I asked there, does anyone know if shockwave player and the adobe reader x have issues?
Detlev - Do you have adobe shockwave player installed too, along with Reader X? I am just trying to figure out if uninstalling the shockwave player (and have just the flash player and flash plugin) would fix (if at all, the problem is because of that).
Thanks and cheers. -
It seems as if I do not have the Shockwave Player installed - at least it doesn't show up in installed programmes, and where I think a video should play on the Adobe site, it doesn't. -
Ok, thanks.
But I don't think having it or not makes any difference to this issue I am having.
I uninstalled it and checked again but the problem persists. (I really wonder what is wrong!!).
Anyway, now I'm back to 9.4.1... as before.
Also, there is no expert support in the adobe forum' is it? no one has replied yet.. I mean no one in term' of moderators or support guys or such... anyway.
Thanks and cheers. -

Fonduekid,
Got your PM and sorry I can't shed any light on the issue. I stuck with Reader 9.4. To be honest I always wait when Adobe comes out with new major versions, because there is ALWAYS some issue. I let the rest of you play the guinea pig. ...big ol' grin...
Gary -
Thank' a lot, Gary.
I'm doing the same right now, passing on the guinea pig role to the others.
But I'm beyond my wit' to figure out why it happens to me, why only with Windows 7, and why is it fine for many many others (in fact, I've seen remarkably very few people with this issue, which also makes me wonder if this is really a widespread problem!))... (similar to an issue I had with random window resizing in Winamp - an issue which I still have, but just got used to living with it..).
Anyway, thanks again and cheers.
I'll update here if I come across something. -
Update:
Hello people, I just thought I'll give a small update here, on the continuing discussion on Adobe forums.. there have been some new suggestions (none of them worked, though!!) and I just thought I'll put a link here just in case anyone now is having a similar issue / anyone in the future would see this issue, and they can try out those suggestions and see if it works for them.
More here.
Btw, I still have not found a solution to this issue and I remain on 9.4.1, unable to use Reader X on my Win 7!
Thanks and cheers. -
I am using adobe 9.4 because 10X would not work in either of my browsers.
-
Btw, are you having the same issue as I'm experiencing?
Thanks and cheers. -
Otherwise, I'm really happy with the improvements for the X version. Much faster startup than before, in particular for the browser plugin. -
Major Update:
this post is a copy / paste from my thread at the Adobe Forums. ( Adobe Forums: Adobe Reader X - Firefox integration...) [I was just lazy to type all over again.. Please forgive me]
-
My guess is, they did a sneaky little fix in an update.

Cheers
