Lavasoft's Adaware 6.xxx and Spybot Search and Destory should stop pretty much all of it when used in conjunction with one another.

After you get it all cleaned, make sure you unistall the microsoft java and use the sun version, then adjsut your browser settings to ask before running java or java script and only let them run from sites you really trust and never from any adult or warez sites.

Do this and 99.9% of that stuff will be history

I haven't heard of uninstalling java. Can you do that from the Control Panel and where do I get the sun one?

Here is a link showing how to get rid of the microsoft java machine and get the sun one. If you have installed XP service pack 1a then the microsoft java is removed, if you have not done the service pack or only have service pack 1 then the microsoft java is still installed and it has a hugh security hole in it and since microsoft does support it any longer there is no fix except to uninstall it and replace with the sun version which does not have the security issue.
