I'm planning on skipping out on the more expensive versions of Vista for my T61 since I don't care for any of the media and overpriced business junk. But what makes me think twice about paying more for Premium is Aero.
So it came to me, since theres 3D UIs add ons for OSs like Linux (Beryl, Compiz) and if my memory serves me right, XP had a 3rd party 3D UI also but it comes at a fee. So if I'm right, it shouldn't be to hard to come up with a program that would enable the code from the Aero without actually paying for the other versions of Vista.
I don't know if this could be called software "piracy" (I think pirating software using software without paying for it, in this case you paid for it, so the lines are a bit blurry) but If you ask me, its really cheap of Microsoft to hold out on Aero on their base addition of Vista. It just shows how much of a monopoly they have the OS market. Its really stupid that they strip down their OS to where it has no benefit over XP.
So if anyone has any ideas, feel free to post. If no one has thought about this then I hope this would get the ball running on a project to make this happen. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels its wrong to make Microsoft any richer then they already are.
