Hi,
I'm the author of Aerofoil (the app that disables Aero Glass when you are on battery). I noticed that it was one of your recommended utilities along with Vista Laptop Battery Saver - thanks!
I have recently updated Aerofoil again to 1.4 beta - this will also automatically switch your power plan when you are back on AC. If you've noticed when you run in the Vista power saver plan it states "Your current plan may reduce performance" this is meant to rectify that. The power saver plan does things such as under clock your GPU when it is idle, disable Aero Glass etc, and probably other things I don't know about.
I've also noticed one user mentioned that the side bar doesn't gets switched off on battery - my bad - I don't use it so never considered it as an option. I'll look into that for 1.5.
A few people wonder if disabling Aero Glass has any real world battery benefits. YMMV but I can tell you that it did for my HP DV9233 - Aerofoil 1.3 extends the battery life, albeit only by about ~5 minutes (2hrs 13 vs 2hrs 5 for my best run out of 3 on a 6 month old battery).
Programmatically certain functions when Aero is running are far slower than when it isn't (Google Get Pixel Aero for example) - this has to be eating extra GPU cycles - I ran into this with my Gesture Magic app I'm working on - the rendering of particles is very poor.
If you want version 1.4 please go here http://silentdevelopment.blogspot.com/2007/11/aerofoil-14-beta-released.html
My dire website at www.silentsoftware.co.uk will be redirecting to this blog shortly since I don't have time to maintain the full site (it never got completed anyway). Please bear in mind this is beta and that whilst I believe switching power profiles more regularly is safe for hardware, I cannot be certain - use at your own risk (I am using 1.4 beta myself as is my fianceé).
If anybody can suggest any new features I can put in Aerofoil to reduce battery usage please suggest them here. Depending on complexity and size I may include them in a future release. Note that primarily I intend Aerofoil to be the smallest of the Glass/Vista feature disabling tools, so please try and keep things simple.
Thanks,
Benjamin

Benjamin,
I would like to try Aerofoil, but I get a "Page not found" error when I try to download it. That is happening with either of the links above and for both versions and the source.

Apologies - I've had some problems with my domain names and have had to redirect them. The links on the most recent Aerofoil blog entry will work:
