A few nights ago I installed service pack 2 on my 32-bit vista computer. Next time I booted my computer, it acted fine, I got to the log-in page, selected my user and input my password.

Then the screen usually goes black for a second while my wallpaper etc loads but now all I get after I login is a black screen with a mouse curser. I know the comp isn't locked up since I can move the cursor but it never loads anything past this black screen.

One small thing I noticed is that when it first starts up, I can't use my USB mouse but if I let it sit there for a while, my mouse does start working. I thought maybe it was just really slow so I let it sit for a few hours to see if anything would come up but no luck on that front.

I've tried booting in safe-mode and restoring as far back as I could but nothing has worked. Any ideas?

I may have had a similar occurance...

If you leave that black screen for 7-8 minutes, will it log on?

    Run a virus scan:

Have you got an Intel graphics card, X3100??

On the other hand, there are plenty of possible reasons for it :(

No, it never logs on, I've left it there for like 2 hours before.

    I have a XPS M1530 w/ a geforce8600.

Which Version of Vista are you running?
    is it 32bit or 64bit?
    have tried uninstalling SP2?

When you installed SP2 did you disable your antivirus software? SP2 does not install well with antivirus enabled during install.

I am leaing more towards a USB problem

disconnect ALL USB DEVICES (printer, scanners, camera, EVERYTHING) and use a ps/2 mouse/keyboard
    restart your pc
if thats fails, go into your bios and disable your USB.
    try again.

if it works - update your bios, usb software and all other usb device software.

also if it is vista x64 - use only x64 drivers. this can also conflict with vista SP2 install.

I've tried booting with nothing plugged in and since its a laptop, don't need any external mouse/keyboard. As someone else mentioned, its 32-bit.

How would I uninstall SP2 if I can't get into windows in the first place?
