So last night just as I was finishing up work on my laptop (a Vostro 1400 running XP), that windows XP auto-update box popped up and began counting down from 5 minutes...to restart my computer. After it had updated and restarted my computer I put the laptop in hibernate mode. This morning I turn on the laptop and everything seems fine, except I can't get online...using another laptop in the apartment, I find that the internet and wifi router are working just fine. So after trying to "repair" my wifi connection on the laptop (about all I know how to do), I decide to restart my laptop. When it powers back up half the icons on my desktop are now pink/purpleish and the other half have these weird transparent lines running through them (that is, you can see the wallpaper)...perhaps an incidental detail but I thought I'd mention it. I still can't get online. I went to device manager and all my network adapters are at least there. I don't know enough about the OS to troubleshoot with any real depth, however. What can I do from here? I tried googling for help but I haven't pinpointed a specific enough problem to make that search fruitful. Any recommended links? What should I do from here? Many thanks in advance to any help. I know this is a fairly generic and maybe vaguely-identified problem, but any guidance would help. I'm feeling fairly screwed and my morning has been ruined so far. TYIA!

See here, if you have ZoneAlarm.

Maybe other software has similar problems.

Good intuition! I do use Zonealarm and that seems to have been it. I can't thank you enough!

I now wonder what's going on with my desktop icons.

Have you tried reinstalling the video card drivers? Have you tried switching to another theme?

John Ratsey has the correct answer for the Internet problem.

I turn on tonight my brother's computer (It has ZoneAlarm Free Version) then there was not Internet connection. I believe it was a virus, but I ask him if he saw something strange and he told me that he saw the Windows Update and after restart it was no Internet. So I just remove the last update and everything was normal. Then I past here to see if someone suffers the same problem.

The desktop icons always show without problem.

So Simic reinstall your video drivers.

    Try rebuilding icons with TweakUI.
