After the installation, you are ordered to restart.
Windows will shutdown and begin to write new SP.
After that, it would boot-up but is a blackscreen. You need to wait about 10 to 15minutes if not mistaken, then you can enjoy SP2.

If you can't boot from a live CD then its possibly hardware - live CDs rtun entirely from the CD drive...

Make sure your BIOS settings are right. I can't imagine why SP2 would change them if it did, but your HDD controller needs to be set the same as it was prior to installation (APCI or Default I think, depending on wether or not you use RAID). If your expecting the computer to boot from the DVD drive, make sure the BIOS is set to check the DVD drive before the HDD in the boot order menu.

System restore... should be available on the F8 menu at bootup... or if you have a Vista install disc you can use that to run system restore.

    Replacing Windows folders won't work.

This would only help if you know which files are responsible and which files are not hardware dependant and replace them individually.

The only way you can do that is possibly if a windows programmer helped you...

If you run the repair facility of a CD it should keep your files - but software may stop working - may - as it varies, I know a repair messes up all Sony utilities on my Vaio...

    Hmmm :(

I was able to run a Vista repair off my recovery disc once... but other's haven't so.. that's possibly a no go...

Can you remove the HDD, back up the data on a secondary computer and start from scratch?

Probabaly better to copy user files over to external then re-install Windows with the restore cd.
You might be able to copy some applications also but if they don't work it's re-install time.

    I suppose it should work.

But repairs aren't as good as a recovery/clean instal if something was really messed up.
