I was trying to access my start menu but it kept flickering when I clicked so I did a hard boot. Before the Windows page I got a repeating alarm sound. I tried hard boot again into safe mode twice with the same alarm. Fourth time to Windows worked as normal but does anyone know what the problem could have been? I wasn't doing anything unusual.

Sounds like a BIOS Beep Code. Basically it's your BIOS telling you something is wrong, likely with the hardware but possibly with something else such as a connection. This page should tell you what it is next time it occurs. You've most likely got a Phoenix BIOS, but a good variety are on the page in case you don't.

Thanks Apollo, I appreciate that. Next time it happens I'll try to narrow it down.
