Hi guys, a while back I got a virus, and in the process of deleting it, I may have cocked some thngs up (possibly deleted a registry file). Running Windows Vista.

Now, to lay it on the line, my system restore doesn't work and malwarebytes can't find anything wrong. However, all my programs work (except internet browsers some of the time).

At the minute, task manager shows up 73 processes on average, a lot of SVChost stuff etc.

The real problem is that windows host processes stop working, forcing a slight pause while it reloads, and at the minute my laptop looks like windows 98 taskbarwise.

Also, firefox crashes a lot when I start up, but after a while it generally calms down. Seems to be plugin related, but when I uninstalled flash the problem still occured. ALl my browsers do crash, but firefox is the most unstable (when sending form data, ie logging in, sending mails and farming on tribalwars.)

It works perfectly in safe mode with networking, but I can't see what's wrong (and I like to watch things while on the laptop, so it's not a permanent option)

I've tried a lot of things, and would have done a general reinstall but my friend forgot to bring the windows 7 disc when he came to see me, now I have to wait until christmas.

    Hope someone has an idea.

Here's a hijack this log btw.

This has got me laughing :)

But really, how is it running everything near perfectly (except the internet problems which are relatively short lived each time) if its so utterly messed up? Even mkv's which are system heavy for me run fine.

Make no mistake, I'll be reinstalling as soon as I get the chance.

Probably want to fix that one^^. Should solve your shaky internet connections. It appears to be part of a virus - probably the one you cleaned up.

Your best bet is a clean re-install. You've enumerated at least 7 different problems, which could likely be fixed, but you'll spend less time installing Windows.

Personally, I'd dump McAfee. You'll find MSE is far easier on your system resources and quite effective.

Hey, how would I go about fixing that one. As I said, I won't be able to do a re-install for over a month yet :/

Never mind, got it myself - part of AV Security suite. That's what caused my problems in the first place. Autodownloaded itself or piggy backed down, started doing a lot of weird things ( icons on desktop, virus.mp3 which made beeping noises, etc etc)

I've had great success with a little app called Combofix. It will only work with 32-bit systems.

I do agree with the advice of others stating that you should re-install Windows, but in the meantime you have nothing to lose by trying Combofix. Make sure that you get it only from the following site (scroll down for the links - bleepingcomputer)

Also, right now would be the time to back up all of your important data. Don't wait until you are forced to format, install.

A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix

Already all backed up (had external hard drive failures too -unrelated, but overall tech hasn't been going well these past two months for me lol)

Thing about combofix is, it does say to only run it if you're asked too. Does it automatically fix some things, leaving possibly important reg files or...

It will backup the registry and then comb it for known spyware/malware keys. If it finds anything, it will make changes to your registry.
Using any deep scanning tool, it is wise to use caution, but it sounds like you are going to have to re-install anyways. It's worth a shot IMHO.

I've personally used Combofix on dozens of Windows XP and Vista machines and it has only "hosed" 1 to the point where I had to recover.

    I hope this helps.

Hey Ibohn, genuinely thanks a lot :)

With McAfee out of the picture my laptop's running a lot smoother (not as much start up lag, shut down lag either), and WSE found an Alureon.H virus which could possibly be responsible for a few of my browser problems (windows and tabs opening randomly), among other things it does.

StringThing, for now I think I'll leave combofix to one side - last ditch option. It seems to be working better with each fix I try (touch wood).

Any more ideas would be welcome btw. As much as I enjoyed the first two responses, they didn't help quite as much as they could ;)
