When you click the little battery it's either (for me)

    balanced
*current mode* (high perfromance/ powersaver/ custom)

Is there any way to make them show all three? A lot of times after I play a game I want to go into powersave mode to cool down and it's a pain having to constantly go to the next window just to do something so simple.

Perhaps a registry edit or something?

This is practically what you are doing already, but I went to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound and right clicked on power options and clicked make shortcut. It put a shortcut on my desktop, so I could get all three. It's not exactly what you were looking for, but imo it's easier.

Does that actually work? The powersave mode can save power by not running the fan. Or possibly by raising the temperature it will turn on at (but that might have been an option on an older laptop I had).

The simpler thing to do is leave it in Balanced all the time. Then it will clock up when you need it to play your game and clock down when you aren't. Personally, I copy the Balanced plan to a new one and then change the options to suite me (when the drive, screen etc turn on/off) and leave it on that plan all the time.

If your VAIO has special buttons which are programmable you can do this easily thru VAIO Control Center from Control Panel.

If I press S1 it just cycles thru Performance Mode - Balanced Mode - Silent Mode. You can tell the diff. because going from Silent to Performance Mode sounds like your laptop is ready to takeoff.

You should allow the laptop to cool off properly once you exit the game, both CPU and GPU are hot and the only fan working is probably really small. Give the fan a minute to cool them off before you turn off the laptop or before you switch to a diff. thermal state.

The difference is pretty instant... I've never had the fan turn off or get any quiter with powersave mode when the temps were up. Switching to Power Save has been the quickest way to drop to 45C on my computer after gaming.

I'll keep the Silent Mode in mind... I've never heard of that.
