Wow. I have my Dell 1520 for several weeks now and alot of updates going on in windows vista 32 bit. I have 2gb of ram. With all these freakin updates I will need 6gb of ram. Damn should have stayed with Apple. When will I learn!
This is crazy. A fast laptop will be slow in a few weeks.

Well, when VISTA or any OS comes out there are tons of bugs, so they need to give you the system patches to fix the problems. If its that slow i would upgrade to 2.5, 3, or maybe 4 Gigs of RAM if you game alot. Anyway, Hope i could help

any updates to an os system and it eats up more memory. it improves reliability and eats up more ram. when you download you see the kbs next to it.as the dell tech said 2gb of ram wont last with all the updated betwwn now and jan of 08 good luck

You are incorrectly assuming that all of the updates are ADDITIONS to the OS. Most are replacements of existing items. Further, this assumes that the entire OS is loaded into memeory all at one time. It's not. The dell tech didn't have a freakin' clue what they were talking about. The size you see has absolutely nothing to do with the memory footprint of the update.

seriously, as Gary mentioned, whatever Dell representative you talked to has zero idea what he/she is talking about. the Updates typically correct/replace/improve functions that already exist on your OS and do not necessarily increase the amount of RAM used. it will increase the amount of disc space being used, but usually this is a trivial amount.

You dont have to download the updates. It is just recommended, not only by MS but by everyone else.

Why not just download a few more gigs of RAM and a new processor to go with it? :)

What are you talking about? I think you need to switch the term RAM with hard drive space.

Most of the best Vista updates aren't even in Windows Update yet... and yes the Dell rep was probably just trying to get you to purchase more RAM for your machine. More RAM for updates .

The more gas you put in your car the more it will weigh. Eventully is will be so heavy that your motor will not have enough HP to move it.

Please do go bac to your Mac. Take the Dell guy with you because the two you together are clueless.

Updates FIX problems as in replace code. Sometimes that replacement code is bigger sometimes smaller but in either case its so small either way to effect your Hard Disk space. What that has to to do with your RAM, I have no idea? Unless you are stating that the updated code will take up more memory just by the fact that you downloaded it? In most cases the new code will use less memory, especially if it fixes a memory leak.
