So I just want to help you guys out there and offer some wicked solutions to your bland desktops :D

So first up: REAL DESKTOP (LIGHT EDITION, NO TIME LIMITS)

    http://www.real-desktop.de/

-3D view of your desktop with little files with incons on them that appear in 3D
-Physics based (throw them, stack them, hang them etc...)
-organize stacks, piles etc... (We all remember where and what is arranged in our houses, just undo the stack later on and youll remember where that file was on the desktop and itll be right there when the stacks undone etc...

Secondly: DESKSPACE (Full Fledged Product... 14 Days)

    http://www.otakusoftware.com/deskspace/index.html

    -3D cube of 6 desktops!
    -Extremely Customizable
    -Efficient
    -Productive
-Finally showing Mac you can have "Spaces" on PC... in 3D :D

    Third: LINUX!

    -Do whatever you want

Unfortunately for us who have windows have to pay... Mac... has these features... Linux... made them and are freee...

    Linux anybody?
Ill gladly switch to linux when it's understandable, or I learn how to understand it... Drivers are my main caveat.

Yeah you get that out of the box with Linux.

But i'm glad windows users now have a chance to try it out (albeit at a price)

There used to be a free ware that did this very thing for XP i believe. But some company bought them out and i guess this is the end result. Still it looks nice and is pretty useful i think (be aware it will start to use more resourses)

There is plenty of freeware virtual desktops for Windows.

The real desktop application looks interesting. Linux is easy to get started with, I'd recommend it if you don't play a lot of games.

Real Desktop free version is very limited, and quite nagging with fishing for users to by the extended version - personal experience.

    cheers ...

Vista programers chose not to include a 3d desktop tool. They chose to use 3d flip instead. Vista is capable of multidesktop out of the box, you just have to enable it through some software.

I don't believe spaces or the linux virtual cube really does much for anything, especially when your multiple monitors. Cool, nifty feature to show off to friends, but in practice useless for me.

It's good for laptops. Does help me a lot. For desktop, no need for it since I have dual 22's

It would still be sweet though if you had the full version :D

Mega stacks on a 3D desktop lol

I use both, the REAL DESKTOP is light so I'll just use it to show it off to people etc...

DESK SPACE is 14 days and I really do love it, but it's quite a RAM hog and I have already shelled out a couple hundred bucks this week alone so yeah...

Wait, so where is this "Real Desktop" equivalent in Linux? All I know is the 3D Cube function in Compiz but that is not the 3D desktop icons...

    Oh, sorry nevermind wrong program

But that video is the Deskspace equivalent (and original) in Linux (FREE)

This is a free linux 3D deskspace alternative... its not quite like the video above, but pretty close http://desk3d.sourceforge.net/

I will try to fnd the Real Desktop for Linux

BUMPTOP IS FOR LINUX TOO ! ! !

And I also read about XGL + Compix = Real Desktop function plugins etc....

I would argue that the virtual cube (actually configurable up to 32 sides) found in Linux is one of the few *useful* features of Compiz Fusion. Otherwise yes, CF is mostly for show.

It's mostly for show, but the little graphical jiggles and movements and such are pretty nice if you use it for a while. You can go overboard with the effects, but you can get a lot of good visual feedback from just a few graphical effects, and it makes the whole thing work a lot nicer. Things like the window previews in the taskbar, shading and window "depth", stuff like that.

I like most of the animations; things like fade, the magic lamp, and wobbly windows make the desktop feel less "rigid" and more intuitive. But in terms of functionality, I still think that the cube is fantastic.

Its awesome, its like spaces in Mac OS X

I keep all my communications like MSN AIM GTALK etc... on one side
    Browsers in another
    Email on another side
    Folders and stuff on another

    etc... Hahaha

All I can say is that it is DEFINITELY useable, productive and simply put, NEEDED

The 2D desktop we use is really getting old, after using these, PS HOME, The Amusement Machine etc... 3D menus and such are just purely essential

Apple has patents for a 3D desktop where you can do the same but its not fully 3D real time, you can hang some pictures on the sides and stack files from a quasy 3D (not true 3D, illusion of space but cramped so you can see all 4 corners etc...)
