For those who experience the BSOD due to Microsoft expansion utility or for any reason (expand.exe) please follow this guide in an attempt to eliminate such failures.

Note1: Please download and run Who Crashed to help pinpoint which .sys file is causing the error

Note2: This process does not only apply to the two files listed, but any other file extension types such as atikgktxx.dll and atikeclxx.exe just repeat the steps below.

    Steps:

    1. Ensure you have the latest and greatest GPU drivers installed... (control panel>system and security>device manager>display adapters>properties (under respective card)>driver date. If you have the latest continue with step 2.

    2. C:\AMD\Support\12-4_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Packages\Drivers\Display\W**A_INF\B******

    3. Copy the file atikmdag.sy_ "OR" atikmpag.sy_

    4. Create a folder called "TEST" and place it either on your desktop or C: drive, paste copied file into this folder.

    5. Open the "COMMAND PROMT" "CMD"

    5. enter the following command: EXPAND.exe atikm(p/d)ag.sy_ atikm(p/d)ag.sys (make sure there is a space between the file types when you are typing or it will not expand)Example: EXPAND.exe atikmpag.sy_ (SPACE) atikmpag.sys

    6. Once done open C:\Windows\system32\drivers and rename the existing atikmdag.sys or atikmpag.sys to atikmdag.sys.bak or atikmpag.sys.bak

    7. Copy the newly created atikmpag.sys or atikmdag.sys file from the "TEST" folder you made earlier into the file path in step 6.

    8. Reboot and your done (all BSOD related to those two files should no longer happen)
Reasons for this issue can be due to incorrect expanding and extracting .sys files for multiple reasons.

    Hi,
i'm suffering from the dreaded "atikmpag.sys" BSOD problem.
I'd love to try your above mentioned fix, except that i deleted the AMD folder on the C drive. (C:\AMD\Support\12-4_vista_win7_64.....)
Now i don't have the files to expand. :(
    Any ideas?

I'm on a HP DV7t quad core, running ATI Radeon HD 6490M, and a sandy bridge processor on Win 7 64bit.
My display drivers are those posted on HP's website for this specific laptop. I tried the latest driver from AMD and it won't install properly.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello!

I have been getting the atikmpag.sys bsod for about a week now.
When I go to C:\AMD\Support\ I get two folders:

    13-1_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql
    and
    13-4_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql

They both contain the .sy_ files, so which one should I take it from?
Also, I am on a desktop and not a notebook, will this method still work for me?

    Thanks! :)

Either should work but I'm assuming you're running the latest 13-4 version of the driver, so you're better off using that one. Just check the version of your driver on Device Manager if you're not sure.

I did figure out eventually that the 13-1 and 13-4 were driver version, so I deleted the older and went through with the process with the remaining one! :) Haven't had a BSOD since.

    EXPAND.exe atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys

^^----- copy and paste the above line.

Also ensure when you run CMD, that you select "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR"

For the guys with the "Cant open input file: atikmpag.sy_" problem, be sure to change the path in CMD to where you putted your files (or put your file in the folder that CMD is having as standard path, IE for me; C:\Users\[USERNAME])

    Worked for me.

Now ill just have to wait a couple of days to see if it solved my problem.

EDIT: Didn't work, still getting BSOD, tried with both files.. Seems like a fresh copy of win 7 inc.

Could you make yourself a little more clear with the steps on how to do what you suggested. I'm actually not familiar with command and all that.

    5. enter the following command: EXPAND.exe atikm(p/d)ag.sy_ atikm(p/d)ag.sys (make sure there is a space between the file types when you are typing or it will not expand)Example: EXPAND.exe atikmpag.sy_ (SPACE) atikmpag.sys

All I get is "No destination specified for: atikm.dag.sys."

I think you may have left out one or 2 steps.

Hi, this thread is very old but I found a solution to the problem 'can't open input file'. I'm posting it here so everyone coming in from google gets a solution:

Select the atikmpag.sy_ on your desktop, right click, select properteries. Under Location you find the correct path you need to input into cmd.

For example my desktop wasn't located under C:\Users\Username\Desktop but under D:\Users\Username\Desktop.
Once you have the correct path open cmd.exe, type in d:, then cd users\username\desktop
then continue with the steps as in the original post.

When you open cmd, yours will be like C:\\Windows\System32>. This is where you are wrong.. Before starting write chdir C:\ in cmd. Then type EXPAND.exe atikmpag.sy_ atikmpag.sys . My suggestion is don't paste the copied file in C:\Test but paste it in C:\ itself. This method worked for me.
