I have another problem (tonight is just not my night with computers). I installed a new program using my administrator account, which is the same way I've installed just about every other program on my computer. In the past, I've always been able to log into my standard account and the new installation would show in my 'Start Menu' and I'd be able to use it just fine. The latest installation, however, has not worked the same way. The program does not appear in the 'Start Menu.' I have to go into the 'Programs' folder just to run it. Does anyone know what I may have done wrong in this instance? I tried to go in and set permission, etc. However, nothing has worked for me thus far.

It just didn't install a start menu short cut. There's a chance you missed an option for that during installation. You can always create you own short cut from the main .exe file, and even just make your own start menu entry if there isn't another fix for it. Try reinstalling if you haven't already.

May I ask what program it is? It could be a common problem.

Edit: Im sorry I think I kinda missed the point of your problem. So there's a start menu entry with your administrative account but not your standard account?

Yes, that's exactly the problem. The program is installed and runs fine in the Admin account. I'm even able to save my files and open them with no problem. I cannot do the same things in the Standard account. Whenever I try to open one of the saved files, it tells me that Windows does not recognize the file. I go through and try to set the program as the default, but Windows will not let me. Do you have any idea why a program would function flawlessly in the Admin account and not in the other? This is the first time that I've ever had this type of problem with any program.

Could be a badly coded program that's asking for admin rights to things it doesn't need. Have you tried installing it from the standard account itself? Not that I expect that to work...

An interesting thing happened when I tried. I tried to completely uninstall the program and reinstall it. After doing so, I noticed that I was not asked to enter the license and registration information a second time and everything returned to where it all was before the uninstall, including the fact that it popped back up in the Admin account even though I tried to install it from the standard account. That leads me to believe that the program is not being completely removed from my registry. I know of programs that claim to clean remnants of uninstalled programs, but I'm afraid of running any of them on my computer.

You can try running ccleaner, I use it, and its safe. I suppose it could be a registry error in regards to trying to install it from the standard account and having that issue. Im still not sure about your main problem, it just sounds like the program permissions are wacky. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I thought of that and went through to make sure that my permissions were set. I even tried taking ownership of the program with my standard account. None of it worked. Again, the program functions exactly as it should in the Admin account but not in the Standard account. This wouldn't be a problem for me if I was logged into the Admin account during use, but I'm never in there. I only go into the Admin account to install programs/updates or check certain files that I can only check through the Admin account.

I'll try CCleaner as you've recommended. In case I don't get a chance to thank you before you log off, THANKS FOR ALL THAT YOU'VE TRIED TO DO/RECOMMEND. :)

It's completely up to the installer where to install shortcuts. A lot of installers give you a choice like "install for all users" or "install for this user only"... but they don't have to.

An easy fix is to right-click the Start menu and click Open. Then right-click the Start menu again and click Open All Users. Then just drag whatever shortcuts you want from your user's window to the "All Users" window.

Are you trying to open a file as std user that you saved as admin? You might lack permissions on the file.

Another possibility: A lot of older programs aren't designed to be run with limited privilege, and some may not work right. If you want, you can try right-click and "Run as administrator"... but that's basically equivalent to running as admin.

Yawn... A few extra keys floating around is typical and harmless. Reducing your registry from 25,000 entries to 24,992 or something isn't going to make your computer twice as fast.

If you want to play with reg cleaners go ahead... just make sure you have backups and System Restore is on. Personally I don't bother. Oh yeah... read this first.

What's the program? Have to install with administrative account and tweak it to give it permission to other users.

Thank you all. I believe that I have now solved the problem. I am now able to access it in my Standard acct. and the files that I save now open properly. I have no idea exactly what I did to solve the problem. I reinstalled it, rebooted my computer, and now it's flawless. What a weird situation.:confused2:

I would like to take the time to thank each and every one who took the time to give suggestions. I really do appreciate the help in every way.
