I searched and found lots and lots of threads but didn't see an answer to my question about the upgrade:

I have Home Premium on my Dell M1210 and have gone to great lengths to get my setup 'just so' as far as which services start, etc. Does anyone know if the ANytime Upgrade to another version changes any of these settings or overwrites drivers or does it simply install or unlock the additional features not already present?

I'm fairly sure you'd have to completely reinstall.

Honestly, Ultimate isn't worth it unless you need one or two specific business features.

I agree that it isn't likely worth the money. I wish there was a way to buy JUST the full image backup program from MS. That's what I really want and have not found a suitable solution for yet. Thanks for the info though.

Im pretty sure if you upgrade to a higher version, it just installs and unlocks the extra features. As Greg said, ultimate isnt worth the price for the features it comes with

There are other solutions like Acronis True Image, this is probably better than the MS image backup. There has been a case here where the MS backup failed

Acronis true image is free for 30days, it creates an exact copy of your drive for storage or to clone into another HD. You might aswell spend the money on this instead of upgrading to ultimate

That's what I was looking at. I'm wondering if the process will set all services, etc. To OEM 'standard' or simply install/activate what is not included in Home Premium. I would hate to have to go back and redo everything as it took a lot of experiementation to get it the way it is.

If I were to buy imaging software I should just save it for the upgrade (one of the points for the upgrade), no?

why not just buy an external hard drive(such as a seagate) that comes with free backup software.

I hear the DriveImageXML is pretty good for cloning a drive, and it's free.

As for the anytime upgrade, I'm pretty sure it just installs the new stuff, and it should not reset anything.
