I am currently using McAfee Internet Suite. However, after some interesting reading I am inclined to purchase a new anti-virus/firewall product. Two questions:

    1. Has anyone heard of AVG Anti-Virus? If so, how would you rate it?

    2. Any other recommendations for anti-virus and spyware?

As always, the comments received in these forums has been extremely helpful, so I thank you and value your input.

Use a web browser that is not Internet Explorer. Most of the garbage is written for it. It is so tightly intertwined with the Operating System that the potential for damage is high if you get virus. I personally use FireFox, but there are others like Opera and Netscape. Get your mail on Yahoo, MSN, etc. That way if you get a virus it is on their computer and not yours. They got people who all went to MIT and speak in binary language who spend 40+ hours a week looking for it. They also are more likely to have the latest updates. Plus if you change ISPs your email will remain the same. I use AVG Free an Ad-Aware. I rarely have any problems. The occasional bad cookie. Good Luck.

I've had excellent luck so far w/ EZ Armor...Road Runner customers get it for free, not sure if you're w/ RR or not.

I have been thru this question before; personally, I have had not problems with AVG (in fact it is the best out there cf to other "free" AVS. I also had McAfee, but licence ran out, so I tried this AVG. I have now for 2 years and I have had not problems: also note, it is not the AVS that keeps you protected; but rather, your computer usage habits (browsing, file sharing, P2P, etc); so if you have a Good Browser (Mozilla, Opera (nonIE)), and AdAware, Spybot, you should be fine with AVG (another layer of protectyion). Hope that helps,
    SL

There's a multiple page thread on AV software already, you might dig into that. AVG is well respected, it's what I use if that counts for anything.

Thank you for your responses. Most of my research today confirmed what you all stated regarding AVG. That is comforting. I will check out Ad-Aware. Was looking at Winpatrol earlier today - dog fan :)

But thank you for the links as further suggestions.
