If my research was done correctly i just realized that both norton and mcafee only operate on pentium systems. Which program should i use for amd based comps? Or do they have like built in virus protection or something?

You are incorrect. Both norton and mcafee antivirus products work fine on AMD systems. Additionally, you may want to consider AVG antivirus which is free for home use.

The AMD CPU does not have any built-in virus protection.

Thank you. Which would you recommend between norton and mcafee? I dont feel comfortable using free software. I know that sounds wierd but i just feel like your missing something.

I don't care much for either. If you have to choose between the two, I'd go with McAfee. I gave up using Norton products in 2003 or so because I found they simply used up FAR too many system resources and weren't that reliable.

You'll probably find as many people recommending one as the other, though.

most of the free versions have pay versions with extra features.

i'd rather go w/out protection if i only had mac and norton to choose from and just be smart in my browsing/email/downloading habits.

EDIT: virii do not attack your cpu, they attack at "software" layer, i.e., the operating system.

it sounds like you are little unfamiliar with some of these concepts so you may want to rethink your relunctance at using free a/v software as many more experienced users swear by them.

I have norton but I'm thinking about getting rid of it. It really does use alot of resources.. However, though annoying, I kind of enjoy when norton constantly asks if I want to allow something or not..Makes me feel like norton is really working and catching things.

if you really want to buy AV software, look at NOD32, bitdefender, or kaspersky. Those are the top rated antivirus programs on the market. Range from $30-60.
