Sorry for the long title - if brevity is the soul of wit, I'm witless- but I believe I saw this issue discussed in another thread several weeks ago, but cannot find that thread now.
Basically, I have a new _HP that came with the full OEM preinstallation gamut, including the 60-day trial version of Office 2007, Home and Student version. I have not touched that trial version at all.
I have a full version of Office 2007 Ultimate on DVD that I'd like to install on this system, and I really don't feel like dorking around with the preinstalled trial version, other than simply wiping its sordid existence off my hard drive.
Is anyone aware of any particular issues I should be watching out for if I just uninstall the trial version through the Programs and Features applet in the control panel, and then install the ultimate version off the DVD in the normal way?

Not-really-helpful anecdote:
I don't know if it was/is a general problem or the notebook manufacturer's fault, but the uninstaller didn't work properly for me, left behind some components that caused error messages when I tried to remove them. Didn't investigate any further since I ended up nuking the default OS install, so no idea if it would have affected the full version installer. -

I've had two problems with Office 2007 trial and Office 2007 retail conflicts.
The first is when someone installs retail over an copy of trial that HAS BEEN RUN; the end result was the retail version expired
The other problem is when someone uninstalled the trial version and tried to install the retail version and the retail version refused to install.
Not sure what would happen if you installed over a non-initiated trial version.
I would defintely uninstall the trial version before doing anything. Then, I would run the office 2007 removal tool
http://www.refusetosuffer.com/software.php
just to be safe. It's just a script that cleans out the registry settings and allows you to proceed. You may not need it, but it wouldn't hurt. -

Well, for me all went well on my Vaio - removed the trial (may have been full office though) immediately after recovery (did it a couple of times already I think), then installed MS Office Home and Student.

I had no trouble with uninstalling the unused microsoft office trial through program and features >run vista's uninstaller. I followed up by running ccleaner before reinstalling the retail one. Worked ok on both a gateway MT6451 and a HP dv5z

Can you not just put in the ultimate code, into the trial version? :\
-
-
to the best of my knowledge, there is no trial for ultimate, professional plus, or enterprise
-
There are definitely different trials... -

Oh i see sorry i didn't think.
Can't you clean out the program files and the appdata folders for office and then registry clean? -
) I do not want to run the risk of seriously borking the whole installation with a muffed Office install.
EDIT: Since I'm going to do it this evening, I guess I'll start with a comprehensive system backup first, and a fresh system restore point, and then see how it goes. If I don't rip a hole in the space-time continuum, I'll post results. -
Home and Student, Standard, Small Office and Professional HAVE trial versions.
Ultimate, Professional PLUS and Enterprise do not.
So, 4 versions have trial, 3 do not.
(I cannot be any more clear than that)

just teasing you, ma--hope you didn't take it wrong

I installed Office 2007 (not sure if it's ultimate or not) without uninstalling the trial version.

tick, tock, tick, tock....EXPIRED!
-
Well if it does that, I will just do it again as it's from a volume key.
And the trial still shows in the program list along with the regular Office programs. Don't know if that means anything though. -
it means do not try to uninstall the trial or you will hoarke up your working copy...
BTW, volume key? No such thing.
We call them "Enterprise" editions now...volume keys are for pirates. Got to use the right terminology or people will think less of us -

Clean install, it's the only way to be sure.

Here are a few links to mull over.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volume_license_key
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828378
http://www.microsoft.com/indonesia/license/resources/vol/default.aspx
"Microsoft includes product activation technology in some products sold through original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and retail channels. Most licenses acquired through Microsoft Volume Licensing do not need to be activated. However, Volume Licensing customers must enter a Volume License Key (VLK) or an Online Services Key (OSK) when installing from some Volume Licensing media."

Re: trial of office
In your installs, were the trials activated and running before you installed your full version? Not saying it happens every time, just that I have seen it happen.

And I could care less what people think of me. That's why I'm a mod. -
I uninstalled the trial version of Home and Student Office from Programs and Features applet, and then ran RipOutOffice2007, which appeared to have terminated with some sort of an error that went by too fast for me to catch it(I forgot to check whether it was compatible with the 64-bit version of _Vista, so perhaps that was it).
At any rate, I then went ahead and installed Office 2007 Ultimate from the DVD I have, and the installation went spotlessly. Thanks to all who chimed in with advice.
