Are they both essentially "cloud" based services?
I understand that Outlook 365 would be available to me on any computer at any time but is it faster or more reliable than a hosted exchange account?

An Exchange server is usually under your control. The Cloud is not.

a hosted one is under control of the host. so it's the same as the cloud.
but well, you get full office, not just outlook, in office 365. but for outlook itself, it's essentially the same, i guess.. -
Is that with hosted exchange I am accessing the host's servers and with the cloud, Microsoft's?
Im trying to discern what the benefits might be with moving to the cloud from exchange. -

it's the same. cloud and a hosted service == synonym.
office 365 has other benefits, far beyond outlook. that's the interesting parts (it's OFFICE, not just OUTLOOK).
but anything that's hosted IS a cloud solution. just as this page is cloud communication tool for notebook fans.
Any benefit to going with Office 365 vs. Outlook through Exchange?
