    Just get an HDMI cable. Optical discs are overrated ;)

    Wikipedia has a nice list of DVD authoring apps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DVD_authoring_applications (including the two mentioned above, which are probably among your best bets)

    The most important thing you need to do is transcode your video to MPEG2 format.

    WinFF is one way to convert avi into mpeg2 fast. DVD quality is limited to SD. If you convert a HD avi file to DVD it means you're only going to cripple the quality. Converting and burning takes time and sometimes you'll run into compatibility issues with the DVD player. Find a way to connect your video and audio source directly to your display.
