If you're looking for a clone'd image of your entire hard drive, I'd recommend Acronis True Image. It isn't free, but works great.

If you are interested in only copying your OS, most computers either come with a copy of your OS, or software installed on the hard drive which allows you to create a backup disk.

    hmm...you could use Daemon tools.

If you don't have a copy of your OS, 99% of the time you can call the company to order it.

No its not the os that I have a problem with. I got plenty of copies of xp around, its just that I want to make an exact image of my hard drive, so that when I install a new HD I can have the same exact setup as before w/o having to install windows and everything else all over again.

Like I said, I used True Image before, but that was on a trial version which has since expired. I was wondering if there were any free software of that kind

    HDClone
I've used the freeware version of HDClone. It's SLOW, but it works well. Some caveats though:
-It will only clone to a larger hard drive
-It will only copy the partition size from your source drive so you have to use a partition program to either create a new partition on your new drive or merge the empty data to your Windows partition
    -Its slower than slow

It's free. You get what you pay for. I've used it to successfully clone my XP install to a larger hard drive.
