Besides the standard software for this already running on my machine , is there some additional software that will disable programs to further improve battery life ?

Not that I know of, but you can customize the power settings if you want. Oh and you can undervolt cpu and gpu too.

"disabling programs" will have little, if any, effect on power consumption.

Some laptop manufactures include software to adjust several settings to improve life. i know acer and asus have them. see if you can download them and check if they work

If you have the laptop plugged in, would it be safe to take out the battery while it's on? Just wondering.

Some recommend it as the heat in the laptop can wear the battery down while plugged in and not charging, but if your power cable comes out (and its always a possibility) you could cause problems in the filesystem should a sudden loss of power occur.

    True.

You'd need something to actively switch off hardware - and reduce screen brithness + colour etc.
Mind you, reducing screen brightness will give you quite a lot or extra battery life.

yup, screen backlights take the vast majority of battery power.

compared to the screen, cpu, memory, and disk are trivial power drains.
