Hey I wanted to know if there were any programs that help stop devices. I have this western digital 320gb passport and always find it annoying to try to disconnect it using the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the tray. It seems to only work sometimes even when I have no documents/files from the hd in use. I think I had read somewhere on here that there was something that could stop drives so they can be removed. If there isn't, anyone have any tips or tricks to remove my external hd?

you can just remove it, all you have to do is set it to quick removal. i can walk you through the steps if you have vista, and possibly xp

Ok, click the Vista orb and go to "Computer", right click any of the hard disks in there and go to the "hardware" tab. From here select your external hard disk and hit "properties". Then, click the "volumes" tab and then click "populate". After that, UAC should appear and accept. From here go to the "policies" tab and select "optimize for quick removal". Then hit ok and that should be it.

To be honest though, i think most external hard drives are set to this by default to prevent consumers from losing their data in the first place.
